Bath Cats and Dogs Home has rescued four eight week-old Lurcher puppies abandoned in a cardboard box in a Frome cemetery.
The puppies were found by a passer by and initially taken to Silverhouse Vets in Frome before being brought to the Bath Home.
The puppies are in a very poor state and have been isolated to control infection. All are flea-infested and suffering from the skin condition mange; as well as giardia, a worm bug causing severe bloating and coccidia, an intestinal infection following exposure to faeces, which will take around three weeks to bring under control. Their bodies are covered in scabs caused by scratching their itchy skin.
Ravenous on arrival, the puppies are feeding and sleeping well and are slowly recovering from their ordeal.
The animal rescue centre is desperate to find their mother, who, they believe, will be in a very poor state. Jackie Dalton, animal care manager at the Home comments, “We are urgently looking for the pups’ mother, who we believe needs urgent medical attention, since the pups could have only caught the mange from her. Given the appalling condition in which the pups arrived, I cannot begin to imagine what the mother is suffering. If anyone can shed any light on her whereabouts, please get in touch with us urgently. Any information will be treated in the strictest confidence.”
