Past grandmasters and budding chess players, as well as the president of the English Chess Federation and TV personality CJ de Mooi will all be coming to Frome next month for Frome’s annual chess congress.
This will be the 21st congress to take place in Frome. The events are organised each year by Frome Chess Club members Gerry Udell and this year is set to take place at Selwood Middle School on Friday 7th, Saturday 8th, and Sunday 9th May.
CJ de Mooi, pictured left, will be making an appearance on the Sunday at around midday. He is an accomplished actor, singer and television presenter with extensive credits in all aspects of the entertainment industry. He is well known for his regular spot on popular television show ‘Eggheads’. He is currently the President of the English Chess Federation
Gerry Udell said, “Frome Chess Club has always been a very strong club. It started out 21 years ago when four of us decided that we wanted to have a chess tournament in Frome rather than travelling to other places.
“This year’s congress is a British Championship qualifying event as well as an English Chess Federation Grand Prix event and it also incorporates the 2010 Somerset Championships, with over £1,500 in cash prizes.
“It has become a popular event and we usually get people from other countries such as Poland and Australia.”
