Issue 323 – 25th anniversary for arts centre

2011 is the 25th anniversary of Black Swan Arts, the centre of Frome’s creative industry.

To celebrate this milestone, photographer Tim Mercer has curated an exciting print exhibition in conjunction with an eclectic mix of artists, designers and students from Bath Spa University. The exhibition will run until 12th May.
Tim says, “This is an exhibition of fun, innovative and affordable art for all.” 25 artists have produced 25 silkscreen, giclée or letterpress posters. The brief was kept purposefully open, based loosely around the theme of 25, allowing each artist to let their creativity reign. Artists exhibiting include Kevin McCloud, Luke Piper, Jonathan Pugh, Mark Karasick, Rachel Ann Grigor, and Day Bowman.
Each poster will have a limited run of 25 and will be for sale for £25. All the proceeds from the exhibition will go towards the Black Swan Arts 25th Appeal, which was officially launched on 25th March, the opening night of 25twentyfive. This money will enable it to maintain the engaging programme of exhibitions, workshops and events that the new Black Swan Arts team have put in place.
The demonstration of local support, from both individuals and businesses, will be critical to its success in getting funds from further afield, such as private foundations and the Arts Council. Luke Wilde, chair of Trustees at Black Swan Arts says, “Overall we would like to raise £25,000 from all sources during the 25th anniversary. This will help us secure Black Swan Arts’ long term future for the people of Frome and further afield.”- Charlie Thomas.

The championship was also a showcase of individual progress, with the following athletes recording new personal best times: Phoenix, Nathan, Jazz, Emily, Isaac, Bella, Ava, Charlie and Emma.

  • 360 new homes and country park planned near Frome rugby club

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby with further reporting by the Frome Times

Up to 360 new homes will be built near Frome’s rugby club if plans are approved in the coming months.

Land promoter Barwood Land entered into a promotion agreement in February 2021 surrounding around 85 acres (just over 34 hectares) of land on the northern edge of Frome, between Frome Rugby Football Club on Gypsy Lane and the B3090 Oldford Hill.

The company, based just outside Northampton, submitted initial proposals (known as a screening and scoping request) in February 2024 to deliver up to 420 new homes within the land, along with significant public open space.

A public consultation event was held at the rugby club in February 2025, by which time the intended number of properties had been reduced down to 330.

Barwood Land has now submitted formal plans for the site, revising the planned housing number upwards to 360 properties – with Somerset Council expected to make a final decision by the summer.

  • Festival favourites Dub Pistols and Laid Blak to stop off in Frome

Legendary party starter band Dub Pistols will be rolling into town on Friday 20th March for the Frome leg of their Enter The Tour 2026.

They will be joined by special guest support and Bristol reggae institution Laid Blak for an evening of dub, reggae, ska and drum and bass at the Cheese and Grain.

From their roots in the 90s big beat explosion to becoming one of the UK’s most electrifying live bands, Dub Pistols have spent nearly three decades fusing dub, ska, hip-hop, reggae, jungle, and drum & bass into their unmistakable sound.

With ten albums, countless festival appearances, and a reputation for chaos-driven live shows, Barry Ashworth and the Pistols remain unstoppable. Expect fresh tracks from their new album Enter The Sound, and all the heavy bass, blazing brass, and high-energy madness that makes the Dub Pistols legendary.

  • Paws, people and community spirit at charity dog show

Frome Football Club was filled with wagging tails and smiling faces as more than 100 dogs took part in a lively charity dog show in support of Dogs for Health.

The indoor event, organised to raise funds and awareness for the local charity, featured a wide range of classes, from ‘Prettiest Bitch’ and ‘Golden Oldie’ to many fun categories in between.

A spokesperson for the charity said, “One of the highlights of the afternoon was the Young Handler class, which showcased impressive handling skills from children working confidently with both young and older dogs. The class drew plenty of applause, celebrating not only good technique but the strong bonds between handlers and their canine companions."

  • From The Mayor

I’ve been reflecting recently on how exceptionally lucky I am to enjoy this life as a councillor and as your mayor.

In my council work, we’ve been reviewing all the applications for grants that are available to groups and businesses that need help. There are so many amazing projects in need of funds, which makes it all the more difficult to decide where the money should go.

Mayoral events so far in February have included popping into Canteen to see dozens of people enjoying hot food on a ‘pay-what-you-can’ basis and watching our amazing Frome College students perform their ‘Back to the 80s’ show; it was brilliant! I visited Purple Elephant’s community day at the Key Centre and learned more about their work with families. There was a dog show at the football club with Dogs for Health, including stalls with goodies to buy, plus teas, coffees and refreshments. Another fabulous family event.

  • Frome writers to showcase new plays

A collection of plays written by Frome Writers’ Collective will be performed at Merlin Theatre.

‘Balancing Acts’ explores the dilemmas faced in family relationships and the unexpected events triggered by chance encounters, past and present.

Created by Frome Writers’ Collective’s scriptwriting group, the show will run on 14th March.

Eight members of the group are busy rehearsing their plays with local actors and Merlin Director Claudia Pepler.

Scenarios range from a confrontation between two of the women in the life of Charles Dickens (pictured) to present-day marital issues, and the plight of a Sri Lankan child whose mother, driven by financial necessity, is forced to work far from home.

  • Spring fun for families at the Merlin Theatre

The Merlin Theatre has a range of shows to entertain children and families this spring.

In March, Selwood Academy presents Oliver! JR, bringing the streets of Victorian England to life from 25th to 28th March. Audiences will follow Oliver, a workhouse orphan, as he becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker, escapes to London, and joins a gang of thieves led by Fagin.

Organisers say, “Full of classic songs like Consider Yourself, Food Glorious Food and Oom-Pah-Pah, some of Frome’s many talented school pupils take to the stage with this great family show.

April brings magic with The Ultimate Bubble Show by Guinness World Record holder Ray Bubbles on 10th April. He will create stunning bubble sculptures and effects, including a volcano bubble, a soap bubble carousel, a bubble ghost, and even a tornado inside a bubble."

  • Happiness habits course at The Good Heart

A six-week course helping people develop ‘happiness habits’ is due to run at The Good Heart from Sunday 15th March.

Action for Happiness, the evidence‑based global movement promoting kindness, connection and wellbeing, is running the Happiness Habits course. The in-person course will be co‑facilitated by local volunteers Sue Jeffrey and Nikki Tanner.

The Happiness Habits course is a secular, science‑backed programme that explores six weekly themes, including gratitude, self‑care, resilience, kindness and meaning, through short expert videos, guided mindful moments and small‑group conversations. Each week encourages participants to try a small practical action to build happier habits and share experiences with the group.

“Sitting together in person made a huge difference when we ran our first course,” said Sue Jeffrey, co‑facilitator. “People formed strong connections, tried new practices and reported feeling more positive after six weeks.”

  • Charity launches support sessions for people with FND

Awareness sessions for people with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) are set to run at Frome Library following a successful launch event.

Organised by the charity FND FrieNDS, the first session on 19th February saw 18 visitors attend to find out more about the condition and the support available. Many joined the charity’s closed Facebook group on the day, while others who were already members came to talk with the team.

Trustee Dave Penny said, “The event started at 11am with someone waiting for us as we set up. This continued throughout the day until we packed up at 3pm. The event was a great success, not limited by the number of visitors but from the reaction I received on the Facebook chat groups I advertised on.”
