YOUNG people in Frome have launched a brand new youth café on Palmer Street, which has been set up by Mendip’s YMCA and run with the help of volunteers.
Sisters Nic and Gill Beers officially launched the youth café with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday 26th of November.
The sisters are members of a youth steering committee, who were consulted on what the youth of Frome would want from the café, prior to its opening.
John Chambers from the youth café said, “The launch went really well. It was a great turn out, with quite a few young people coming in to have a look around.
“So far, we have had a lot of positive feedback. In order to progress the café and move forward, we would like to act on the suggestions of young people, so please do drop in, take a look, have a drink and offer any feedback.”
Bristol YMCA’s singing group provided the entertainment at the opening.
The café is a venue solely for use by young people. Non-alcoholic drinks and food are on offer, along with music, a seating area and a wii games console.
Initially the café will open on Thursdays from 4.00pm-6.00pm for 11-13 year olds; Fridays from 6.00pm-9.00pm for 14-18 year olds; and Saturdays from 12.00pm-5.00pm for all ages.
John commented that the venue would hope to expand its opening hours and activities in the new year but in order to do so, more volunteers will be needed.
Currently, the café is run by two members of Mendip YMCA and an apprentice. They are accompanied by three volunteers.
