Keep Frome Local pledges renewed campaign on Saxonvale

A RECENT public meeting has demonstrated ‘overwhelming’ concern from the community about ‘seriously flawed plans’ for the Saxonvale development, says campaign group Keep Frome Local.

Keep Frome Local held the meeting at the end of last month to gather views from the public, following the revelation of Frontier Estates’ plans for the Saxonvale site which include a supermarket, shops for new retailers and a new public square.

The group was set up in 2010 to object to the possibility of a big supermarket on the site, and says that the current proposal for a supermarket is still considered by many to be ‘simply too big.’

Another key concern raised at the meeting was that the proposed development is isolated from the town centre, and could lead to major traffic issues.

Keep Frome Local reports, “Keep Frome Local (KFL) held a packed public meeting at the Cheese & Grain on Wednesday September 25th. Over 150 people attended, and expressed serious concern about Frontier Estates’ new plans for the Saxonvale site, as well as suggesting how its redevelopment might be different, and better suit the town. The shared view of those present was overwhelming; there are huge issues at stake in Saxonvale’s redevelopment, and Frontier’s current plans are seriously flawed.

“The meeting heard from town councillors Mel Usher and Pippa Goldfinger, who talked about the planning process and the role played by local government. They were joined by Frome Civic Society chair Ric Swann and Chamber of Commerce president Nigel Harris, who both drew attention to the current proposal’s shortcomings, and what they could mean for the town. There was disappointment at the decision by Frontier Estates not to take part in the meeting, despite being asked by KFL to meet the public, answer questions and explain their plans.

“The most crucial element of the night’s events came when people went into 10 working groups, and discussed their views about Frontier’s proposals, how Saxonvale’s redevelopment might be different, and what role Keep Frome Local, the town council and the local community in general might play in one of the most important issues to have faced Frome in years.

“People’s key areas of concern and opposition include the following issues:

• Most of the new development’s big retail units will back on to the town centre, meaning that the view from the Kingsway area will partly be of delivery yards. This will create a major eyesore, and compound the sense of a cut-off retail park on the outer edge of the town.

• There are serious traffic issues: first, the prospect of lorries servicing the retail units driving up and down the already-congested Vicarage Street; and second, supermarket traffic – again, including lorries – clogging up the mini-roundabout at Garsdale and surrounding roads.

• Although the vision of Saxonvale in Mendip Council’s Planning Brief was based on a “seamless extension” to the town centre and continuous pedestrianised access from Market Place to a new development, walking routes to the site will still involve the often perilous King Street, and the crossing of traffic-packed Saxonvale – both of which underline how cut-off the proposed retail area will be.

• There is a widely-shared view that the proposed supermarket is simply too big; with a footprint of around 60,000 square feet, it will be much the same size as the current Asda in Wallbridge: a size of superstore simply inappropriate for the town centre.

• People also raised things that a Saxonvale redevelopment might include; buildings and amenities for community use, cycle routes, smaller shop units that might be used by local businesses, a serious enhancement of the nearby riverside area, economic activity other than retail, and more.

“This was the fourth public meeting we’ve held since Keep Frome Local was originally founded in 2010,” said Keep Frome Local volunteer Luke Wilde. “As usual, the opportunity to gather together and discuss the town’s future gave rise to an informed and energized conversation, and produced a shared position that we’ll now campaign on.

“We’re here to give voice to huge community concern about Frontier’s plans, and make sure that the long-overdue redevelopment of Saxonvale results in something that enhances and complements the town, rather than threatening it.”

  • Frome Town seal historic double with dramatic cup final win

Frome Town completed a historic league and cup double with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Portishead Town last night in the Somerset Premier Cup final at Twerton Park.

The Robins capped a remarkable season, having already secured the Southern League Division One title, but were made to work for their latest silverware after twice coming from behind.

Portishead took the lead on 12 minutes, before David Duru brought Frome level just before the break. The Robins fell behind again early in the second half, conceding on 51 minutes, but substitute Sam Meakes equalised with 10 minutes remaining to set up a tense finish.

Callum Gould then struck the decisive goal on 86 minutes to seal the win and spark wild celebrations.

The victory marks Frome’s fifth Somerset Premier Cup triumph, following successes in 1967, 1969, 1983 and 2009, but their last two finals, in 2014 and last year in 2025, have ended in disappointment.

Town fans will have a chance to celebrate the club’s first ever league and cup double in the final game of the season in a repeat fixture against Portishead Town on Saturday at Badgers Hill.

  • Frome bids to become UK’s Town of Culture

Frome has taken the first step in its bid to become the UK’s Town of Culture, with Frome Town Council submitting an expression of interest to the national competition.

The Town of Culture programme celebrates towns where culture is part of everyday life, and where creativity can play a role in strengthening communities, improving wellbeing and supporting local economies.

Following a well-attended stakeholder meeting, Frome’s bid builds on the town’s strong cultural foundations, from its nationally recognised venues and organisations to its network of festivals, markets and community-led activities such as the Carnival and the Children’s Festival.

If successful, the bid could bring up to £3 million of investment to the town, supporting an ambitious programme of cultural activity and a long-term legacy focused on cultural opportunities for local people.

  • Skydive to thank charities behind Frome girl’s care

A group of tradesmen in Frome will complete a 15,000-foot skydive next month to raise funds for four charities which supported a local girl following major surgery.

The group of 13 will complete the skydive on 22nd May at Old Sarum Airfield in Salisbury, aiming to raise £1,000 for the charities which supported Nancy Groves when she underwent heart surgery and trachea reconstruction at Great Ormond Street Hospital in May 2025 when she was just 18 months old.

The funds raised will go to The Grand Appeal at Bristol Children’s Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, Great Western Air Ambulance Charity and The Sick Children’s Trust.

Nancy’s dad, Ian Groves, said, “After just over two weeks in the Intensive Care Unit, we were admitted to a recovery ward at Great Ormond Street Hospital before finishing Nancy’s recovery at Bath Royal United Hospital.

“Post-op, Nancy experienced three episodes of not being able to breathe resulting in three 999 calls and blue-light transfers to Bristol Children’s Hospital. During our third stay in Bristol, a CT scan showed extreme narrowing in her airway. This led to an air ambulance transfer from Bristol to Great Ormond Street. Nancy underwent another procedure to remove granulation from her airway which was causing the blockage."

  • Frome Wild Bunch column: Growing food in a wildlife garden

As well as trying to encourage wildlife into my garden, I also like to produce some food for us humans to eat! And yes, sometimes I have to share it with the local wildlife.

Last year wood pigeons decided to strip my plum tree of fruit, eating the small, still green plums well before they were ripe (we got a little fruit from the lower branches). Sparrows are very fond of chard seedlings, pigeons and white butterfly caterpillars love to eat plants of the cabbage family, aphids decimated my broad beans and as for slugs and snails.

Obviously, I do not use pesticides in a garden that I wish to share with the local wildlife.

  • Iconic Frome tree makes new picnic bench

A new picnic bench has been installed in the play area in Victoria Park, created from timber salvaged from a well-loved 140-year-old tree.

The Norway maple tree was felled in May last year after a serious fungal condition rendered it unsafe.

Some of the timber has already been made into a nature-themed bench by specialist woodworker Graham Derham, unveiled in September last year.

The new bench has been handcrafted by town council ranger Mike Wright, providing a sociable space for picnicking in the younger children’s play area and continuing the life of the Norway maple close to its original position.

  • Frome Hoedowners cleanup town

A group in Frome dedicated to weeding and hoeing the streets recently cleaned up the Market Yard and riverbank area.

Frome Hoedowners carried out a pre-Easter cleanup of the Cheese and Grain and Market Yard area, including the riverbanks, to make it more welcoming for visitors and residents.

The group reported, “Lots of litter, weeds and leaf mulch were removed, which was swept up and carted away.”

The Frome Hoedown Group was set up and is managed by Somerset councillor for Frome, Shane Collins.

The group meets at 11am on the last Sunday of each month. For more details and to find out where the group will be meeting contact Cllr Shane Collins at shane@gn.apc.org.
