  • Somerset Council faces ‘lingering death’ over £73m budget gap By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby Somerset Council is facing a ‘lingering death’ in the face of an estimated £73m budget gap, councillors and auditors have warned. The council recently launched a consultation on its initial budget proposals, including just over £20m of new savings or increases in its existing fees and charges. Clive Heaphy, the council’s interim chief financial officer, had previously admitted that the authority would require exceptional financial support from the government for a third consecutive year in order to balance its books without totally exhausting its reserves. But members of the council’s audit committee have warned that the council may have left it too late to turn things around – making effective bankruptcy increasingly likely. This comes after external auditors Grant Thornton warned that the council had to go faster to change the way it delivered services, issuing three statutory recommendations or ‘red cards’ against the authority.   • Frome Wild Bunch Column – New Year in the garden Now the festive season is behind us, we can start planning for the year ahead. The weather will be mixed but dry days give us a chance to do our bit now for wildlife – whether we have a pot outside the back door, our own garden or access to an allotment, green space or one of Frome’s community gardens. The first step is to resist the urge to tidy up. That pile of ‘rubbish’ in the corner – dead grass stems, dried leaves, twigs and branches – will provide a wonderful habitat for a range of wildlife, from tiny spiders and beetles through to hibernating hedgehogs. Allowing even a small part of a garden to keep its winter debris will be a great help. Late winter is often the toughest time for birds, when many of the berries have been stripped. Feeding them (being mindful of cleanliness to minimise the risk of spreading disease) has the added bonus of bringing them close – a delight to watch in the dark days of winter.   • Charity keeps Lisa Wells’ memory alive with successful fundraising year A Frome charity has reported a successful year of fundraising in 2025 in memory of Lisa Wells, who died from bowel cancer in 2019. Lisa’s Army helps cancer patients create lasting memories by providing days out, experiences and special treat boxes for those going through chemotherapy. The charity was set up in 2020, after Lisa died from bowel cancer on 17th August 2019. She launched the charity before she died and, ever since, the team has been dedicated to fundraising, holding events and working hard to offer support, help and positive experiences to individuals facing a cancer diagnosis and prognosis. “We have had a good year of fundraising and raised nearly £5,000,” said Lisa’s mum, Deanna Wells. “Fundraising can be hard and we do need more than that to keep going properly but we have a really dedicated committee.   • Pancake race to mark Valentine’s Day Planning is underway for a family-friendly pancake race event in Frome Town Centre to jointly mark Pancake Day and Valentine’s Day 2026. The ‘Stacks of Love’ pancake race will run on Saturday 14th February and will feature themed crafts and games for all ages and a crêpe stall. Ginny Adams of local theatre company Rare Species will act as compère for the day. At ten-minute ‘waves’ throughout the event, six pancake race contestants will set off from the Blue Boar and race up to the Boyle Cross, flipping their (fabric) pancakes as they go, in heart-shaped frying pans. There will be themed waves for runners aiming for a pancake race personal best, children, grandparents and some ‘open’ categories.   • Frome teen’s sponsored litter picks for Arctic trip A teenager in Frome has been litter picking around the town to raise funds for an Arctic expedition in Finland this year. Iris Errington-Deamer, aged 14, is due to embark on their first trip away without family on a week-long expedition to Finland with a group of 20 other home-educated young people aged 11 to 15. To raise funds, Iris has been litter picking in the community and is asking residents to sponsor them in their efforts. “I don’t want any animals to get injured by litter and it looks horrible,” said Iris. “I’m going to go out every week in Frome. “I am feeling nervous about the trip but I’m excited to learn things I’ve always been interested in but not had the opportunity to do, like ice fishing, husky sledding and bushcraft survival skills like building snow shelters."   • Somerset Council to spend nearly £2.2m by 2029 looking after trees By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby Somerset Council will spend nearly £2.2m over the next four years looking after the county’s trees including ongoing efforts to combat ash dieback. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Highways Act 1980, the council has a legal duty to ensure that trees within its care (e.g. those on public roads and in parks) do not “pose an unacceptable risk to the public”. The council has now awarded a new four-year contract to carry out necessary maintenance and reactive work at an estimated cost of £675,000 a year – the equivalent of £2,190,000 over the lifetime of the contract. The contract will include additional work to combat ash dieback, which is now “widespread” across the county and requires significant intervention to prevent the disease from spreading further. Paul Sweetman, the council’s service manager for highway risk, said, “We are responsible for the management of a large and diverse tree stock across our land holdings, including along highways, in parks, schools, and on other public properties.   • Community radio course for young people Frome’s community radio station is launching its third 10-week ‘Introduction to Radio’ training programme for young people aged 14 to 18. The new course with Frome FM is designed to teach essential radio show production techniques, including presenting, interviewing and technical broadcasting skills. Following completion of two previous courses, two new youth shows are regularly broadcasting, with another currently in production. One show born from the training programme is The Three Horsemen, hosted by Yanah, Toby and Dax, who meet up every month to record their music-and-chat show.   • Resident launches uplifting book on Ukrainian identity A local resident from Ukraine has launched a new humorous Ukrainian anthology, Bless the Mess. Svitlana Kulyk moved to Frome three years ago with a mission to promote contemporary Ukrainian authors and introduce British readers to modern Ukrainian literature. She is the founder of the literary agency Lit_Agency_Phoenix and, in her latest publication, Bless the Mess, Svitlana brings together humorous short stories by multiple Ukrainian writers, offering a positive and uplifting perspective on Ukrainian cultural identity. She said, “For many people in the UK, the first time they learned about Ukraine was through the tragedy of war. With this anthology, I wanted to reintroduce my country from another angle – one that is bright, warm and full of humour. It shows that Ukrainians are not defined only by struggle; we are also creators, storytellers and people with a rich sense of humour.” Read more on our website. The link is in our bio.
