Frome’s latest creative business is launching a Kickstarter campaign to get its first yogawear collection off the ground—and into an online store.
Frome-based entrepreneur and yoga enthusiast, Kate Foster, hopes to raise £4,750 to help fund Badd Karma, her slogan-led yoga top collection.
The idea Badd Karma came about when Kate became frustrated with unrealistic portrayals of yoga online and especially in social media.
Kate said, “When I talked to friends who were thinking about taking up yoga, I heard a lot of people say they felt intimidated or inadequate compared to the typical images of yoga that you find online, with impossibly bendy women doing challenging poses against a sunset backdrop. I wanted to find a way to celebrate real-life yogis who practice in their bedroom every morning or in a village hall once a week, and to say that it’s OK no matter how you look, and whatever the level of ability you have.”
The result is a collection of limited-run slogan sweatshirts and T-shirts, ethically made from organic cotton and screen-printed with eco-friendly inks in Frome. New designs will be introduced several times a year in small, themed collections. The first collection is called ‘Empower’ and will launch in February on the Badd Karma online store—once the Kickstarter target is met. 8% of profits from every Badd Karma store purchase will be donated to social inclusion projects.
Supporters of the Kickstarter campaign are invited to choose from a variety of rewards, including first pick of garments from the limited-run Empower collection.
“I hope that people will get behind this campaign because it flies the flag for local business, for social inclusion and for the incredible health benefits of yoga,” said Kate. “Our designs are outspoken, cheeky and humorous, which sets us apart from stereotyped yoga sentiments. I know they’ll make our customers smile and hopefully, feel great about their yoga practice.”
