Frome Lions held their annual Summer Fete at Frome’s Victoria Park on Saturday 13th June.
There was a large turnout which was very pleasing as grey clouds loomed overhead with the threat of rain.
A real family friendly atmosphere drew people to enjoy the many attractions on offer. The fete was opened by Frome’s mayor cllr Kate Bielby, who, with Lion president Mark Symes and Lion Keith Macleod, presented a cheque for £3,250 to Steph Cox, community fundraiser for Dorothy House. This large amount had been raised at the Frome Lions Golf Day held last month.
The event gives many local charities the opportunity to have their own fundraising stalls, and crowds sauntered, relaxed by the music provided by the Frome Town youth band and DJ, Pete Dayman-Johns, who also did an excellent job compering the afternoon.
As well as stalls, entertainment was provided, in particular by the dog handing display team, when owner and dog skilfully negotiated difficult obstacles, much to the pleasure of the onlookers. Children were drawn to the Punch & Judy show and the Lions train, as well as the ice cream stall that proved as popular as the hot dog stand and Lions teas, all of whom did well.
The Lions would like to apologise for the fact the park’s public toilets were locked, or not fit to be used, through no fault of their own. It is hoped similar embarrassment will be avoided in the future.
After costs, the Lions estimate that they have collected about £700 for their charity fund at the fete, which is up on last year. But the main winner is that the fete brought the local community together, on a summer’s afternoon. The Lions would wish to thank all those who supported the afternoon and see you all next year.
