The Frome Royal Naval Association (RNA) has upheld its annual tradition of celebrating one of the greatest naval battles in history, the Battle of Trafalgar.
This year, members of the RNA enjoyed a meal and a talk by Captain Bill Oliphant, the RNA National Chairman.
The Loyal Toast and a toast to “The Immortal Memory” were marked by drinking traditional Navy Rum. “The formalities were followed by ‘swinging the lamp’, a naval expression for the exchange of good old sea stories. A great evening was had by all,” said Norman Elmer, a member of the association.
“On 21st October 1805, the Battle of Trafalgar ended in victory for the British Fleet over the combined forces of the French and Spanish Fleets, hastening the end of the long-running Napoleonic Wars. Unfortunately, it also resulted in the death of the national hero Horatio, Lord Nelson. The victory (also the name of Lord Nelson’s flagship) is celebrated annually.”
The Frome RNA welcomes new members who have some interest or connection with the Royal Navy. For further information, email normanelmer20a@gmail.com or visit the website https://www.royal-naval-association.co.uk.
