THE exhibition team at Frome museum is busy gathering information on the lost pubs of Frome.
This is for an exhibition due to take start at the museum on Tuesday 23rd July. Admission is free.
On the 1774 map of Frome there are 37 pubs listed, but by 1906 according to the Frome directory for that year, there were 53. The museum is after any information as to what has happened to these pubs or any knowledge about them and when they were open.
Mick Davis from the museum said, “Do you have any information on these gone but not forgotten pubs? Any photos, memories, documents that you might have from the earliest times to the present day would be of great interest and we would love to hear from you. Allowing us access to make copies or to take notes would be greatly appreciated.
“We have already found some intriguing information; for instance, in an early newspaper there is mention of a suicide in a Frome pub called the ‘Crooked Fish’ – do you know the location of this pub?
“There was hardly a street in the town that didn’t have a pub. Cheap Street for instance boasted three pubs; The Crown and Thistle, The Albion and the White Hart. Milk Street has had seven! Come along and see what we have discovered. Maybe your house was once a pub.”
In conjunction with the exhibition the museum is producing a book which will include many of the present-day pubs and is looking for any personal reminiscences or stories that you may have.
Frome Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday 10.00am to 2.00pm or can be contacted by tel. 01373 454611 or email info@ fromemusem.org
