Mayor of Frome, 23 year-old Dickon Moore, is calling for more young people to get involved in politics in Frome and beyond.
Dickon said, “Young people need greater representation in our society. The best way for that to happen is by self-representation, instead of someone else trying to do it. We need higher voting figures and more young people in politics.”
Dickon was elected as a town councillor at the age of 19 for the Market ward of Frome.
Dickon added, “I understand that this issue partly stems from many young people being disillusioned with the current political situation, but that is precisely the reason that those people need to make a stand themselves. I want to send the message that you can get involved in politics, local or national, from a young age.”
Frome Town Council have also appointed a Mayor for Young People, Cara Honey, and Deputy, Alex Shingler. Cara and Alex both sit on the council and help to provide the perspective of young people when making decisions.
Dickon said, “It’s a big commitment, but it’s also very interesting, rewarding, fun and can teach you a lot.”
Elections for the town council are due to take place in May 2015, and Dickon is keen to encourage young people in Frome to stand.
