THE Merlin Theatre has raised over £400 for the global charity ‘Save the Children’.
Artistic director at the theatre Claudia Pepler said, “Recently the Merlin theatre had two showings of Hamlet with Benedict Cumberbatch which were livestreamed.
“At the end of each performance Benedict Cumberbatch made a moving appeal for Syrian refugee children using the words of the Somali poet Warsan Shire, ‘No one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark’ and ‘A parent only puts their child in a boat when the sea is safer than the land.’
“He asked the audience in London and across the country to give money generously for this cause and the Merlin audience responded incredibly at such short notice. This week we have sent a cheque for over £400 to Save the Children. Thank you so much for your generosity.”
