FROME’S new police enquiry desk is set to open at the library on Monday 4th April, to replace the former police station, which closed last year.
The new desk will be manned during working hours from Monday to Friday, and will enable people to speak to a member of the police force to report crimes, make general policing enquiries, report road traffic collisions, apply for firearms licences, and get advice on crime prevention. The desk will also have a lost and found facility.
Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said, “I am pleased that we will be able to offer a firm police base for Frome in a publicly accessible and well-used community venue. By working closely with our partners at Somerset County Council we are delivering value for money by reducing expensive and under-utilised police buildings, while still maintaining a high level of public service to our communities.”
The police desk will be open Monday to Friday 9.30am-1.30pm; 2.15pm – 5.00pm.
Somerset’s cabinet member for libraries, councillor David Hall said, “As a council we are always looking for innovative ways to improve services we offer to our communities. We know libraries are so integral to their towns and villages with people using them as a hub of the community, so working with a partner like Avon and Somerset police to bring another service into the library is a progressive move forward for all involved.
“The police will be a welcome addition to the range of services already successfully operating from the library, including Somerset County Council’s Registration Services; Mendip District Council’s Access Point; and Frome Town Council’s Information Centre. This latest development continues to place the library at the heart of the community and we are very pleased to be able to help the police maintain a town centre facility for local residents.”
