A new community for the spiritually curious is emerging in Frome and will run monthly workshops.
Mary’s House Community is a gathering of seekers exploring together what Christian wisdom can teach about how to live more fully in an uncertain world.
Throughout this year, the community will offer monthly workshops exploring its three concerns, starting on 10th January with ‘The Art of Thinking Together.’
A member of the group, Simon Keyes, said, “This will consider how we can learn about ourselves through dialogue and questioning.”
Other forthcoming subjects include gratitude, kinship with nature and ‘What is a Contemplative Life?’
Workshops will include a meditation practice and a shared meal. Workshops are open to all.
Community member Martha Oster said, “We’d love the community to be a home for people on the edges or who have felt marginalised by the established church, as well as for those who feel comfortable in their faith who want to deepen their journey. Our hope is that we can gather together with curiosity rather than certainty, celebrating our common humanity, walking together rather than drawing lines.”
The community also plans to develop the Giants Garden, adjacent to St Mary’s Church in Innox. Simon said, “This will be a welcoming quiet space in which people of all backgrounds can enjoy stillness and the beauty of nature. In time, it is hoped to offer space for gardening and cultivating fruit and vegetables.
“The community’s activities focus on contemplation – experiencing stillness and the silent presence of God; dialogue – listening and learning from each other; and creation – seeking a deeper relationship to the natural world.”
