Frome Community Education is set to welcome three new tutors at the start of this autumn term with courses starting from 18th September.
The new tutors will considerably expand the range of courses offered. Chris Barker will deliver two, five-week courses on “An Introduction to Mindfulness”; Alison Clink is to introduce “Five Contemporary Novels” and Graham Burgess will encourage you to consider “Philosophy – As If It Mattered”.
Chris Barker has been practising Mindfulness since 2012 and has found it has brought a calmer and more open perspective to his life. A qualified and registered teacher with the University of Exeter, Chris has introduced mindfulness to both teachers and pupils, and has expanded his work to adult populations impacted by anxiety, depression and stress. Chris is keen to challenge our understanding of Mindfulness as something that can be promoted through colouring books and apps on phones, and instead explore what it is – and just how powerful it can really be.
Alison Clink is a local novelist, short story writer and creative writing teacher. Her course will involve students looking at a different contemporary novel each week and then taking part in a lively, tutor led analytical discussion about the book, its construction, its author, and its impact on the reader. Alison herself has had over 50 of her short stories published in mainstream magazines. Her memoir, The Man Who Didn’t Go to Newcastle was published in 2015 and her first novel, Two Blackberry Lane, came out last year. She has a BA in English and European Literature from the University of Essex, and an MA in Creative Writing from Bath Spa University.
Graham Burgess is a graduate in Philosophy from the University of Cardiff. His course will explore a range of exciting new philosophical and scientific hypotheses and be loosely based on the recent work of Dr. Iain McGilchrist. No prior reading or knowledge is expected but students are encouraged to be ready to challenge their own assumptions!
Frome Community Education was founded in 2011 to provide classes for adults who like to learn for pleasure. It is a not-for-profit, Community Interest Company, run by volunteers. This autumn term it is seeking to run 45 weekly courses and 7 one-day workshops – some from as little as £18. For more details of the full programme of courses, pick up a brochure from any Frome Comm Ed venue including the Cheese & Grain, Black Swan Arts, Frome Library and the Frome Art School at the Silk Mill as well as from many local cafes and retailers.
