Paralympians support College fundraiser

FROME College’s Interact Club invite you to ‘Frome Extravaganza’, a fundraiser and fete on Monday 24th June from 3-5pm. 

Special guests at the event will be Team GB Paralympians, 7-a-side football captain, Jack Rutter and seated volleyball and T42 100m runner, Julie Rogers. 

On the day you can join in with their 1km fun run open to everyone for a £1 suggested donation, or a 5km competitive run for anyone aged 14+ with a £5.60 entry free. 

To enter the races visit www.fullonsport.com. 

There will also be food stalls, music, ice-cream, and a £1 raffle. The event is in aid of Winston’s Wish and Martin House. The event is also sponsored by Frome Triathlon Club. For more information search ‘Frome Extravaganza’ on Facebook.

  • Iconic WH Smith name to disappear from Frome The WH Smith shop in Frome will soon be rebranded, with a new name taking over the familiar high street brand. Located in the town centre, the store will adopt the name ‘TG Jones’ as part of a wider change following the sale of WH Smith’s high street operations to Modella Capital, the owner of Hobbycraft. Founded in 1792, WH Smith has long been a staple of UK high streets. Despite the change, the store’s operations will continue as normal during the rebranding process, with Modella Capital assuring customers that it will be ‘business as usual’ throughout the transition. WH Smith, which employs 5,000 people across 480 UK stores and its Swindon-based support centre, will now focus solely on its Travel business. Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
  • Presentation to give vital update from the West Bank A talk in Frome will raise awareness of the plight of people in Palestine. Mohammad Tamimi, founder & director of Hebron International Resources Network (HIRN) will be speaking in Frome as part of his UK tour. Organisers say, “Mohammad has worked with Palestinian communities facing the brunt of the Israeli occupation for more than 23 years. “HIRN provides support to many of the most threatened and marginalized Palestinian communities in the West Bank, bringing the compassion, practical help and encouragement needed to remain resilient.” Light refreshments available will be available and Zaytoun Fairtrade Palestinian products will be available to buy. The talk will take place at Trinity Hall on Trinity Street in Frome from 7pm to 9pm on Saturday 26th April. Admission is by donation with all proceeds going to HIRN.   • Bring a tin to the gym – new food bank donation point at Frome PureGym Fair Frome officially opened a new gym last month, marking the start of a new permanent donation point for the food bank. Senior coordinator for Fair Frome, Lenka Grimes, cut the ribbon to officially open PureGym at Wessex Fields, on Friday 28th March. The site has now become a permanent donation point for the food bank. “We are really pleased to have another donation point in the town in order to increase food bank stocks,” explained Lenka. “We spent £8,000 last year on food bank items and we just can’t afford to do that anymore.” Fair Frome donation points are situated in Sainsbury’s, Asda, Lidl, Tesco Express, Co-op Fromefield, Co-op Badcox, Howden Insurance on Catherine Street, Coventry Building Society, Frome Wholefoods and the Cheese and Grain.   • On-call firefighters needed at Frome Fire Station to keep town safe The station, which is based in Keyford, is crewed by local residents and workers. However, a decline in crew numbers means a fire engine might not be available when people need it. “Frome is a busy on-call fire station with approximately 400 calls per calendar year in the town and surrounding area,” explained watch manager Jason Collier. “This is an opportunity for men and women who live and/or work within five minutes response time to the fire station to potentially save lives by attending emergency incidents such as fires, road traffic collisions, chemical spills, floods, gain entry and we also talk to our community about fire prevention.” There is a recruitment day on Saturday 26th April, from 10am to 2pm for anyone who may be interested in the role.   • Library opening welcomes pupils to read and retreat A new library has opened at Berkley First School, providing children with a safe space to retreat and enjoy a book. Pupils named the library ‘Reader’s Retreat’ after voting on a name for the space, which was made possible by a £495 grant from the Center Parcs Community Fund. Headteacher Suzanne Thompson said, “We would like to declare that the Reader’s Retreat is now open. The space is for all pupils to enjoy; it is a tranquil retreat, a safe place to sit and get lost in an adventure or be taken back in time. “The area is a nurturing space where small groups can also come together to explore a range of books.   • Get up with the lark and experience the dawn chorus Somerset Wildlife Trust are hosting a ‘dawn chorus’ walk in Frome on Saturday 19th April from 5.30am to 7.30am. Led by ecologist and wildlife tour guide Matt Collis and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the walk offers an opportunity to tune into the sounds of birdsong in the early morning. Event organiser Bryony Slaymaker of Somerset Wildlife Trust said, “There’s nothing quite like the magic of the dawn chorus – a moment when nature wakes up in a symphony of birdsong. It’s a chance to pause, listen, and connect with the natural world in a way we so often miss. For those of you unfamiliar with the seed library, let me give you a quick summary. It’s your friendly, local, permanent seed swap located in Frome Library.   • Parents ‘Brave the Shave for Maeve’ and raise vital funds for charity A group of Frome parents raised over £2,000 for charity by taking part in a ‘Brave the Shave for Maeve’ fundraiser last month. The parents had their heads shaved to raise funds for Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) and Balloons, a Devon-based children’s bereavement charity, after one of the organisers, Kerry Meech’s niece, Maeve, died suddenly in 2022. Over 100 people gathered at the Station Approach on Saturday 15th March to support the parents, with a special appearance by the town crier, who read a special piece he wrote for the occasion. “Under the watchful eye of hairdresser Abi, the children from my gardening club, Sprouts, took it in turns to do the deed, and they did a pretty good job,” explained Kerry.   • King Charles calls regional press ‘cornerstone of democracy’ as Frome Times attends Buckingham Palace The Frome Times was amongst the attendees at Buckingham Palace recently at a reception held in recognition of the importance of regional media. The newspaper’s deputy editor, Kate Drew, attended the event, hosted by King Charles and Queen Camilla, to celebrate the role of local journalism in communities across the UK. She was selected to attend by the Independent Community News Network, which represents over 100 independent media outlets, including Frome Times and its sister titles.
