Frome Running Club ‘A’ team climbed up to third place in Division 1 of the Wiltshire Road Running League table, with the ‘B’ team tightening their grip on second place in Division 2, following a spirited collection of performances from 15 runners in the Compton Bassett Five-mile race.
The race promised a fast and flat route with good potential for personal bests. Six of Frome’s runners got on the podium for age category prizes, including Sian Meaney (38:29, PB) who came second in the women’s race, and Barrie Knight (42:47 PB) who came second in the men’s V70.
Emma Yeo, who is in training for her first ultramarathon, was amongst the runners setting PBs. “After three months of slow and steady ultramarathon training, with plenty of walking in the mix, I was a little apprehensive about running five miles at race pace again,” said Emma. “My last Compton Bassett run was my five-mile PB so of course I wanted to beat it. It’s one of my favourite events: well organised and lots of cake at the end! Despite the warmer than ideal weather, I shaved a whole two seconds off my record. A small margin, but a PB all the same!”
Jay Bigford, who ran his second race for Frome, finished in 32:36 and enjoyed the warmth and smiles of the community event. “The course itself was great, twisting and turning before opening out to a beautiful wide vista of classic English countryside,” said Jay. “It was a very mixed field, meaning there was something in it for every level of runner.”
Frome Running Club offers both off and on-road training, for racers and non-racers alike. The club welcomes new members, whatever the ability. For more details, visit www.fromerunningclub.co.uk.
