There was no secret show at the Cheese and Grain ahead of Glastonbury Festival this year and despite the venue’s announcement on 20th June that no show would take place, some residents were suspicious.
In the week leading up to Glastonbury Festival which took place on 23rd to 25th June, the Cheese and Grain reported a high volume of enquiries from people asking whether a ‘big’ act was coming to play in the town, following last year’s last-minute Sir Paul McCartney show and the historic Foo Fighters gig that took place in 2017.
However, this year the venue posted an update on their social media pages to confirm that no acts had been booked. The post attracted nearly 200 comments from people, with many suspicious of the venue, particularly as the update referenced ‘churning up’, which linked to the name of a mystery band, ‘The Churn Ups’, that was listed on the Pyramid stage line-up and revealed at the festival itself as Foo Fighters.
Some people also thought Elton John could be performing in the town, ahead of his headline set on Sunday 25th June.
One person said, “It’s all very exciting the things that happen in little old Frome. I think it would have been amazing if Lewis Capaldi had done a warm up gig, I would have gone to that with bells on. Previous acts have not been my cup of tea. I wish they would get Sam Ryder and Michael Ball in the future.”
A Frome resident who was gripped by the possibility that a show could be taking place, said, “I was very excited by the possibility that a secret show could be happening. Despite believing the venue deep down, I remained suspicious all week and really thought the venue were hiding something in their comments, especially when they referenced ‘churning up’. I kept re-reading the comments as I was sure they were giving clues! It was entertaining and quite exciting to keep up with the comments between the Cheese and Grain and residents. Fingers crossed for next year!”
