LATER this month there is a talk by Simon Cooper from Flaxland UK about natural fibres, ancient and modern, on Friday 26th April from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
At Frome Town Hall, Simon will share his expertise not only on the historical aspects of flax, which provides agricultural and industrial products, but also linen for fashion and maritime use. “He will also chat about the future of the plant as a very sustainable crop, with its potential to replace some fossil fuel-based products and support bio-based industries,” says a spokesperson for the event.
“This talk is another event of the ‘Sewing the Seedsc Community project, which has distributed flax seeds to more than 50 local participants who are growing a metre square of flax in and around Frome. With a practical application, the project aims to raise awareness of climate change, the benefits of gardening for wellbeing, and a greater understanding of how natural fibre clothing can be produced.”
This free event is being hosted by Sewing the Seeds Frome, a community flax-growing project. It is supported by Edventure’s Future Shed, Frome Food Network and Everyone Needs Pockets Textile Reuse Network as part of the Green & Healthy Frome programme on climate and health, supported and funded by the Lottery’s Climate Action Fund.
Tickets need to be booked, as there is limited space. Go to https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/ search Flaxland.
