Children aged between five and 10 years old are needed to boost numbers of young life savers at Frome’s St John Ambulance Unit.
The town currently has just two Badgers – SJA’s youngest volunteers – after older members progressed to the charity’s Cadet programme, or moved away.
Frome’s Teazle Badgers have been active since 1987 and the Sett’s leader, Mark Cornish said, “‘We would like to expand our membership so we can hit our 30th birthday in 2017.
“We provide a safe and enjoyable meeting night for children. They have lots of fun, learn first aid and gain recognition for all kinds of activities as they work towards the ultimate goal of becoming ‘Super Badgers’.
“Our mission statement is to provide opportunities for any young person to develop social and citizenship skills by taking part in an active programme and, most importantly, we’re equipping children with knowledge that could make them the difference between a life lost and a life saved.”
Badgers participate in 15 activities, receiving a certificate and badge once each subject is complete. When they have completed 12 subjects they become Super Badgers – the highest award possible – and receive a special badge they can wear on their Cadet uniform when they transfer up on their 10th birthday.
The Badger Sett meets on a Thursday night at the St John Ambulance headquarters, in Bath Street, Frome (BA11 1DW).
