AS living beings, we constantly need nutrition to grow and repair our bodies and fuel our physical activity. Although we can survive with very little food, we do not survive long without water.
If our need for nutrition is not met in a balanced and healthy way, we can become obsessed with trying to fulfil this need at the expense of our other needs. Hunger and thirst quickly become our highest priorities if not addressed. Everything that we eat and drink affects us, regardless of whether we are conscious of these effects.
A simple example would be; that if we use up more calories in physical activity than we consume, we become fatigued and, over a long period of time, start to lose weight.
Conversely, if we consume more calories than we expend in physical activity, then our bodies tend to store these calories and we automatically put on weight. For optimum health, we need a variety of different foods, and over reliance on one particular form of nutrition can quickly upset the balance that our bodies need.
Our bodies have subtle ways of telling us what we need, but we have an increasing tendency in our busy modern lifestyles to ignore or override these messages.
This month, see how many conversations you can have using these prompts: Are you listening to what your body is asking for in the way of nutrition? Are you using food as a substitute for something else? Do you need to change your diet?
Check out our monthly radio show, where we explore this in detail. Go to our Frome FM Show Page Talk Grow Thrive. You can also come and meet us at Frome Victoria Park Cafe on Friday 10th May 10-12pm for lots of engaging conversations about your needs, which really matter (no need to book)
