THE Merlin Theatre has a busy schedule over the coming weeks and is preparing to open the ECOS amphitheatre for outdoor shows.
A spokesperson for the Merlin said, “Spring is bursting out all over at Frome’s favourite community arts venue, the Merlin Theatre, as the team prepares to open the ECOS amphitheatre, ready for its annual feast of outdoor shows!
“Enthusiastic regular audience members already know that turning up with blankets, picnics, perhaps a warm coat and some cash for the bar is all part on the town’s traditional welcoming in of the spring and summer season. Shows staged on the ECOS (European Community of Stones) amphitheatre start this year with an afternoon Buffalo Gals show and their light-hearted approach to old-time country and bluegrass music, often associated with the settlers who joined the goldrush to California.
“Accompanied by stunning Appalachian step-dancing, and suitable for audiences of all ages, Buffalo Gals’ instantly accessible tunes, ballads and soaring harmonies are played and sung by some of this country’s finest bluegrass musicians including composer and multi-instrumentalist Kate Lissauer plus, guesting for this season, Hayseed Dixie’s own Hippy Joe Hymashy.
“Theatre-loving families of all ages will be delighted to see the return of internationally-renowned touring company, Illyria. Considered by most to be one this country’s finest, and certainly longest-running, outdoor touring theatre companies, Illyria will be entertaining Frome twice this season. Starting with Robin Hood, and featuring tales of camaraderie with swashbuckling action and riotous comedy, this multi-rolling skilled troupe will be live and ready for action on Sunday 21st May with Robin Hood, returning in July with a new adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.
“Also taking to the stage, as we head towards the equinox, will be Shakespeare experts Quantum Theatre and their brand new, contemporary production of one of this country’s most enduringly popular plays of love and intrigue, set on the night when fairies can even be seen. A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be staged on 11th June in a perfect way to spend a Frome afternoon.”
