AFTER the disappointment of the cancellation of the Frome Half Marathon this year, The Pod Squad took it into their own hands to run 5k and support their charity.
A group of 18 Pod members, family and supporters came together on The Old Showfield, Frome to run on 17th July.
The organisers arranged a 1k or 5k route which could be run or walked in light of the very hot weather. The Pod was supported in this by Emily Denham from Parkrun Frome and the participants used the Parkrun course.
The event arranged by The Pod charity enabled adults and young people with additional needs to fundraise and promote awareness of the charity, but also build their self-esteem, confidence, and physical fitness. Pod members received a certificate for completing the challenge.
One member said that she was really proud of herself for taking part, and that she really enjoyed being part of the team. Everyone gave their best and encouraged the other runners.
Members of the public also came to support and cheer the runners on as they completed 3 ¾ laps of the showfield.
Spokesperson for The Pod, Becky Bird said “Our members were so disappointed when they thought they had lost the opportunity to be part of The Pod Squad. It is a highlight in The Pod calendar.
“Our members are really proud of their contribution towards their clubs and to raising the profile of The Pod in the town. They love being part of the team.
“We decided to arrange this event so that they could continue to benefit from participation, in so many ways. It has been so much fun, although hard in the heat. But everyone is proud of their achievements. It has been such a success we may do this again.
“Marshalling, water stations and encouragement around the course were provided by members of the wonderful Frome Town Rotary, complete with bells and whistles.
“Big thanks go to Emily from Parkrun for her support. (Parkrun takes place every Saturday at 9am on The Old Showfield site and anyone can join in. Register at Parkrun.org.uk)
“Thanks also go to Frome Cricket Club and Frome Agricultural Society for allowing the event to go ahead on the Showfield site.
“The Pod co-creates social opportunities for children, young people and adults with additional needs in and around the Frome community. It’s not too late to make a donation to support our fantastic squad and The Pod charity. Go to – www. totalgiving.co.uk/appeal/podsquad22
