FROME College has praised its students for their exam success, achieving results above or at the national average, despite the nationwide picture showing that results had dropped to 2019 levels.
Reflecting on the success of A-Level and post-16 students, who collected their results on Thursday 17th August, Principal of Frome College, Emma Reynolds said, “Regardless of the challenges this year group has faced and the Government’s decision to return to pre-pandemic standards, our sixth form students have received some excellent results this summer. The fact that our students have achieved so well is credit to their determination, hard work and the support of families and College staff.”
The results showed that 24% of students achieved A/A* grades (24% in 2019); 52% achieved A* and B grades, up from 46% in 2019 and 98% of students achieved A*/ E grades compared with 96% in 2019.
The college reports that a total of 133 Frome College students sat examinations for 365 qualifications across 30 subjects.
The Principal said, “Many students in many subjects achieved very well but we must single out the following subjects for exceptional results: art, business, health and social care, mathematics, sport, psychology, photography and textiles.
“As you can see, our students have performed extremely well and standards remain in line with or in fact above those of 2019. Well done and congratulations to everyone – we are very proud of you all.”
Gayle Willmott, chair of Governors, added, “Well done to each and every student who took post-16 examinations this summer. You have all done really well and deserve an excellent future- whether that be gap year travel, University, apprenticeship or employment. Good Luck!”
The following week, students who had sat GCSE and BTEC exams opened their results, with 103 students achieving grade 7s (equivalent to grade A) or above in 382 qualifications.
Principal Emma Reynolds said, “It is surprising that the Government has chosen to reintroduce normal marking patterns with a cohort who have clearly not experienced regular key stage four years. In the context of this decision and the many challenges this year group has faced, we are very proud of each and every individual and the results all have received today.
“304 students have taken a total of 2,495 qualifications and have gained some fantastic levels in a wide range of subjects. We are particularly proud of the overall outcomes in mathematics, religion and philosophy, health and social care, sport, art, photography, textiles, biology, physics, media, music, drama and children’s learning.
“In all of these subjects, students made brilliant progress with an impressive percentage easily surpassing their target levels. Well done, results like these are a measure of real hard work and determination.
“A total of 103 students achieved grade 7s (equivalent to grade A) or above in 382 qualifications this summer. To achieve such high outcomes is excellent for any year group, so for this year group exceptional.
“Thank you to all of our staff and families who have supported this bright and ambitious group of young people. We have many individual stories of determination and hard work to tell and will do so in our GCSE presentation evening on Thursday 16th November.”
Chair of governors, Gayle Willmott said, “Well done and congratulations to everyone on receiving their GCSE and BTEC results. Thank you to all the staff at Frome College and the support of families and parents in helping our young people gain these qualifications which are so important for their futures.”
