The team behind the Frome Talking Newspaper is recruiting volunteers and is keen to hear from anyone interested in giving their time to this vital service.
Frome Talking Newspaper is run by a dedicated team of volunteers who, each week, read the local news at the Frome FM recording studio. The radio technician edits the content and prepares it to be broadcast every Saturday lunchtime.
This service was set up for those who are registered blind, as well as partially sighted listeners, providing them with a vital link to what’s happening in their town and supporting them to feel part of their local community.
Frome Talking Newspaper chair, Liz Andrew, says that the service has been running for nearly 40 years and times have changed considerably. She said, “Long gone are the days of the news being recorded at a kitchen table with the editions painstakingly edited on reel-to-reel tape! Now, the state-of-the-art facilities at Frome FM mean the recording and editing can be done in a couple of hours by their team of skilled engineers. The recordings are also duplicated onto memory sticks that are posted out each week to listeners who cannot access a radio or the website.”
Frome Talking Newspaper say, “We are now recruiting volunteers and would like to hear from anyone who would like to volunteer some time to the service. They are currently looking for a new secretary and administrator to support this small local charity. If you’d like to find out more, please do get in touch.
“The service is also looking for businesses to sponsor their weekly broadcasts. If you are a Frome business that would like to give back to the community and support a small charity, wewould love to hear from you.”
