Issue 334 – Students celebrate exam success

STUDENTS at Frome Community College have been celebrating the school’s best ever A-level score performance, along with impressive GCSE results over the past fortnight.

The college opened at 7.00am to ensure that the 400 strong sixth form received their results as early as possible. The tertiary department has recorded its best ever individual students’ point score. This scoring system is used to measure performances at A-level and subjects which achieved the most top marks include chemistry, further maths and French, where at least half of students achieved A* and A grades.
Principal Wendy Missons is ‘delighted’ with how well her students have performed, especially with mounted pressure on students this year. She said, “This is a particularly anxious year for students, with pressure on university and college places and the hike in tuition fees, and anything we can do to give our young people a helping hand is well worth it.
“The students may not realise how well they did this year but the highest ever points score means they have taken more subjects than ever before and achieved higher grades, we are delighted!”
Achieving A* and A grades in all their A-level subjects were Vicky Cox, Daniel Cutting, Madeleine Kelly (5 grade As), Louis O’Sullivan, Joseph Page (4 grade As) and Naomi Parnell. Alister Bowles, James Brownlie, Lucy Erlicher, Luke Emery, Joseph George and Alice Hamden also achieved a string of top A- level grades. Tom Ashman, Kieran Barton Sapak, Rachel Connew, Kelley Harrison, Scarlett Larman, Sarah Pritchett, Oscar Ratcliffe-Schofield and Lilly Stamp achieved at least two “distinction” grades at BTEC.
The following Thursday, the College was delighted to announce its best ever GCSE results. The 318 year 11 students achieved 71 percent five A*-C, breaking the 70 percent barrier for the first time, and 50 percent achieved A*-C including English and maths.
P.E, music, textiles, business and German saw a rise in pass rate by 20 to 30 percent.
Amongst the many successes were; Hannah Turner, with ten passes at A*-A, including five A*s; Matthew Hockedy with four A*s and six As; Matthew Steele with five A*s and four As; Ellie Taylor and Elly Sims with six A*s and two As; Imogen Oakes, Stacey Turner, Scarlett Sangster, Eirinn Rusbridge, Thomas Kendall Isabel Still and Hollie Clements also achieved eight to ten grade A*-A results.
Wendy Missons said, “Every single student we saw has worked incredibly hard to achieve their grades, and we wish them well for the future.
“Most will be returning to continue their studies with us, and have already started their sixth form induction. Staff are preparing for the new year. There is still so much more to do.”
