Hundreds of families brave high winds for Sports Fest

DESPITE very high winds, this year’s Sports Fest has been hailed a great success, with over 300 families taking part in various sporting activities across the town.

There were a variety of sports on offer, from trampolining, aerobics, boxing and canoeing to self-defence, rhythmic gymnastics and bmxing to name but a few.  The climbing wall and Frome Town Archers, initially affected by strong winds, were able to carry on following a very windy start.

Azeema Caffoor from Young People Frome said, “It was fantastic to have the support of both the sporting community within Frome and Simon Rumbles from Knightstone.

“The football club opened its doors to us again, Creative Aquatics and Divoky Riding School also joined us at their own venues, which meant that we were able to see over 300 families participate in sport.

“We really hope that this will springboard people into joining more groups and into having an active summer.”

Chris Roach from Elevation and a sponsor of the event said, “ It is just great to feel part of the community.  It’s not about finding new members, but letting kids who would otherwise not have the opportunity to have a go, feeling part of the community and getting people more active every day.”

Knightstone Housing Association who worked in partnership with Frome Active for the event, also launched their voucher scheme ‘Creating Active Communities’ at the Sports Fest which, alongside the Frome Children’s Festival Project, will allow young people to try sports for no or low cost throughout the year.

Simon Rumbles from Knightstone communities who was based in Victoria Park said, “I thought it went really well – a nice mix of people and activities and it didn’t rain!”
