Fair Frome shares figures from ‘challenging but successful’ year

Local charity Fair Frome has reported a challenging yet successful year in its mission to provide practical support for individuals facing financial, health and social difficulties.

The charity is the provider of the town’s food bank and Food @ Five, which offers free hot, nutritious meals at three venues around the town as part of a warm space initiative where people can enjoy a cup of tea and a chat.

It is also well known for its Furniture and Baby Basics Bank, its Assistance Scheme and the ‘Grab and Go’ breakfast bags.

Senior co-ordinator at Fair Frome, Lenka Grimes, said, “For many people in Frome, the past year has been an extremely challenging one with rising food and energy bills and inflation hitting individuals and families.

“Over 40% of our food bank users are in work but with high local housing rental prices and low wages, they are unable to make ends meet. As a local charity, as well as providing practical support, we have also provided emotional support to those who come to our doors in crisis.”

Over the past year some of the services has provided have include the following:

Food Bank: Distributed 488 individual food parcels and 753 family food parcels, including fresh items such as eggs, milk, cheese and butter.

Community Garden: Produced fresh fruit and vegetables and provided a space for everyone to enjoy.

Fresh Food Vouchers: Issued over 2,400 vouchers for fresh fruit and vegetables from a local shop, over 2,400 vouchers for quality fresh meat from a local butcher, and over 1,100 vouchers for fresh bread from a local baker.

Christmas Support: Delivered over 150 Christmas food parcels and 273 personalised, wrapped presents for children. Participated in The Frome Christmas Get-Together, serving around 150 meals and offering companionship on Christmas Day.

Food @ Five: Provided 5,278 hot meals across three locations, free to anyone on benefits or a low income. This initiative offers a warm space from 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm and a welcoming environment.

Holiday Lunches: Served 1,787 lunches during 51 sessions in school holidays, in partnership with Purple Elephant.

Monthly Sunday Lunches: Hosted meals for families, also in collaboration with Purple Elephant.

Furniture Bank: Supported over 140 households by supplying 256 donated items, 65 donated electrical items and 60 white goods (mainly cookers and washing machines). Repairs were made to cookers and washing machines where possible, and 7.4 tonnes of waste were diverted from landfill.

Assistance Scheme: Supported 95 families with school uniforms, refurbished laptops, vouchers for clothes and shoes, heated blankets, carpets, and transport for appointments. Collaborated with Frome Lions, Kevin Corcoran and Rotary to provide funding for carpets.

Baby Basics Bank: Supported 25 families with baby equipment, such as cots and prams.

Homeless Support: Provided weekly shower and clothes washing facilities.

Drop-in Services: Hosted housing advice, homeless and inclusion GP drop-ins, Citizen’s Advice sessions and digital inclusion workshops.

Collaborations: Worked with partners, referrers, and other groups to assess needs and coordinate practical support.

Campaigns: Advocated on issues relating to local poverty, in affiliation with the Independent Food Aid Network (IFAN), the Living Wage Foundation and The Equality Trust.

Assistant coordinator at Fair Frome, Rebecca Harrison said, “We were delighted to have built on the strength of our Community Pantry, which is now in its second year. It offers a low-cost shop to members for a six-month period to facilitate sustainable access to food and allow individuals and families to budget.

“The scheme has been a real success story and currently has 60 members and is growing. 2024 also saw the start of our Breakfast Club. It was being made clear to us that some children were going to school without breakfast. The government has promised that eventually every schoolchild will be offered the opportunity of a breakfast but until that actually happens, our team of volunteers is at the Cricket Club every Monday during term time, distributing well over 70 breakfasts to local schoolchildren.”

Chair of trustees at Fair Frome, John Killah, said, “Frome is a truly remarkable town. I have never ceased to be astonished by the incredible generosity of the people in this town. On behalf of our trustees I would like to give a huge thank you to everyone in Frome who has supported us over the past year – staff and volunteers, local councils, businesses, the Rotary Clubs, Inner Wheel, Frome Lions, charities, churches, schools, all our referrers, voluntary agencies and the many thousands of individual people and families who have donated their time, food and funds to help us continue our work.

“Without the help of all these amazing people and organisations, Fair Frome would simply not be able to achieve what we already do. As we move into a new year, a huge ‘thank you’ once more to our many supporters who help make sure that as a charity, we really do make a difference.”

  • ‘Hard work starts now’ says Frome Town boss ahead of new season

Frome Town boss Danny Greaves says “the hard work starts now” as the Robins return for pre-season following last season’s title-winning campaign.

Danny has been reflecting on a “busy and productive summer” after guiding Frome back to the Southern League Premier South at the first attempt. And he has made clear the focus has already shifted to the next challenge.

“While winning the league was a major milestone, we have always viewed it as just one stage of a wider objective,” he said. “Following our relegation from the Southern League Premier Division 12 months earlier, our goal was clear: earn promotion, return to Step 3 and then establish ourselves there. We have completed the first part of that journey, but the hardest work starts now as we prepare to secure our status at this level.

“We are confident that we have the structures, processes and footballing identity in place to compete at Step 3. More importantly, we believe we have a squad capable of competing against the very best teams in the division.”

  • Cara Dillon to celebrate Frome in special festival concert

Renowned Irish folk singer Cara Dillon and her partner, acclaimed musician and producer Sam Lakeman, will present a unique concert celebrating their adopted hometown as part of this year’s Frome Festival.

Having made Frome their home shortly after the festival was established by Martin Bax, the couple have become deeply connected to the town and its vibrant cultural community. In this special one-off performance at the Merlin Theatre, they will combine songs from across their award-winning catalogue with personal stories, memories and reflections on more than two decades of life in Frome.

Cara Dillon said, “It’s such a pleasure to be playing a show at this year’s festival. I absolutely love the atmosphere in the town when festival time comes around. Every venue is buzzing with music and events, and the streets are full of people heading to concerts, exhibitions and talks."

‘Cara Dillon & Sam Lakeman – A Frome Festival Special’ takes place on Saturday 11th July at the Merlin Theatre. Tickets are available from the Frome Festival website www.fromefestival.co.uk and from the Merlin Theatre and Cheese and Grain box offices.
  • Fun day to mark 10th anniversary in memory of Frome biker

A community fun day is being held this month in memory of a Frome man who lost his life in a road traffic collision 10 years ago.

Stuart Lange died in a road traffic collision in 2016. Since his death, friends and family have come together each year to host LangeFest in his memory.

This year’s event will take place on Sunday 12th July at Gouldy 08 on the Critchill Manor Estate, raising funds for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

The day will begin with a motorcycle ride-out, with riders meeting at Frome Railway Station at 9am before travelling to the venue.

  • Frome restaurant donates surplus food to community fridge

Food that would otherwise go to waste will now be shared with local people thanks to a new partnership between Jay’s Kitchen and Edventure Frome’s Community Fridge.

Each Sunday, surplus food from Indian restaurant Jay’s Kitchen’s popular buffet service will be donated to the Community Fridge, where it will be made freely available to residents.

Community Fridge manager Terri Pitts said, “Food waste is one of the biggest challenges facing our food system. We’re delighted that Jay’s Kitchen has chosen to work with us. Their support means even more good food stays out of bins and reaches people who can enjoy it.”

Jay’s Kitchen, based in Oldford, is open seven days a week and is known for its Sunday buffet.

  • Daredevil team skydive 15,000ft for Fair Frome

A team of seven fundraisers took to the skies in a 15,000ft skydive, raising more than £3,000 for Fair Frome.

They completed the jump on Saturday 20th June at Old Sarum Airfield in Salisbury. It was coordinated by Fair Frome, giving volunteers and supporters of the charity the opportunity to take part in a fundraising challenge.

The charity supports residents in financial or food poverty, running the town’s food bank, community pantry scheme, baby basics bank, furniture bank and Food @ Five.

One of the team, Linda Bridges, said, “It was an absolutely fantastic experience. We were unsure whether we were going to be able to take part because it was overcast and cloudy. It was a shame because we had really geared ourselves up. Luckily, we were able to take part and it was amazing.

  • Get involved with Frome’s community gardens

Volunteers are invited to help out at Frome’s community gardens to learn new skills and take care of the space.

Frome has a growing network of community gardens and green spaces, including recently developed spaces like Milk Street Green and the community woodland at Spring Gardens.

There are also established areas like those at the Key Centre and Broadway Community Gardens, with a new space under way at St John’s, behind Frome Football Club.

Mayor of Frome, Cllr Mark Dorrington said, “Not everyone has their own garden or outdoor space, but everyone benefits from time outside. Sometimes we lose the habit of heading to the park when swings, slides and roundabouts lose their appeal and at the same time, perhaps without noticing, we lose the benefit of being out in nature. Our community gardens offer the chance to relax and meet people, perhaps learn some new skills and take care of the space together.

  • Deadline approaches for feedback on Frome school proposals

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

Frome parents and residents have until 10th July to have their say on proposals to replace the town’s three-tier school system with a two-tier model.

Frome is one of the few remaining parts of Somerset operating a three-tier school system (comprising first, middle and upper schools) rather than the more widespread two-tier system (comprising primary and secondary schools).

An informal consultation was held in February and March over the proposed shift to a two-tier system, with 71 per cent of parents expressing their support in principle for the changes.

A public consultation is now open until 10th July with the changes expected to take effect from September 2028 if there is sufficient public support.

  • Saxonvale bid deadline confirmed as community proposal enters final stage

Somerset Council has confirmed that formal bids to purchase the Saxonvale site must be submitted by 9th July, marking a key milestone in the future of the 12-acre town centre site.

For Mayday Saxonvale, the confirmation means its community-led proposal is now in its final preparation stage as it works towards submitting its bid.

More than 350 people have invested over £320,000 to support the plan to bring Saxonvale into community ownership, with Mayday saying further investment will strengthen the proposal being put forward. The group is working with social impact lender Resonance and development partner Stories to finalise the funding structure for its bid.

  • Frome College introduces ‘no phone’ policy

A school in Frome has implemented a ‘no phone’ policy following government guidance to restrict the use of mobile phones in school.

All students at Frome College in Years 9 to 11 have been given lockable Yondr pouches to place their phones, smartwatches and earbuds into at the start of each school day.

Pouches will be unlocked at the end of each day by being placed against a specially designed magnet. There are over 40 unlocking sites around the college campus.

Principal Emma Reynolds said, “We had been planning a mobile-free campus strategy from last autumn, pre-empting the government’s guidelines released in April, which recommend that all schools restrict the use of mobile phones and smart devices throughout the day. The Department for Education has been consistently clear that mobile phones have no place in school and pending legislation has meant that Frome College has decided to implement a pouch system to support students.”
