Cyclists take on Catherine Hill as Cobble Wobble returns

The iconic Cobble Wobble returned this month, with cyclists of all ages and abilities tackling the challenging sprint up Frome’s Catherine Hill.

Over 1,000 people lined the hill to cheer the cyclists vying to reach the top as quickly as possible. Over the course of the day, 150 participants signed up to take part.

The overall winners, named King and Queen of the Cobbles, were 18-year-old Frome resident Charlie Hoy, who completed the challenge in 32.54 seconds, and 13-year-old Amelie Eaton from Trowbridge, who climbed the hill in 34.52 seconds. Amelie races BMX competitively and is striving to make it her professional career.

Organiser and founder of the event, Andrew Denham, said, “It was an amazing event and we are so incredibly grateful for the community support in terms of those who turned out to support the cyclists on the day, took part in the challenge, and the small businesses which helped out and made the event possible.”

The event was a staple of Frome’s annual calendar between 2009 and 2012. It is open to everyone from professional athletes to members of the public of all ages, with many wearing fancy dress to take part.

Top sponsors of the event included Red Bull, GoPro, Marin Bikes and Schwalbe Tyres, as well as local businesses such as Positive Experience and Frome Town Council.

Following the success of this year’s event, Andrew said some of the sponsors have already signed up for next year.

Over the years, the event has attracted participants and media coverage from around the world. It is also credited with inspiring events such as the ‘Cobble Hoppel’ in Germany and serving as the inspiration for the Red Bull Hill Chasers event, held in cities across the world.

In previous years, it has attracted internationally acclaimed cyclists, with the fastest time recorded by six-time British trial champion Chris Akrigg at 21.51 seconds.

  • Frome Hoedown volunteers clean up Portway pavement

The pavement along Portway has been refreshed by residents who cleaned and repainted the railings.

The work was carried out by the Frome Hoedown team, who spent 2.5 hours transforming the area on a sunny Sunday. The railings now have gold roundels and the foliage has been removed.

Organisers said, “Many thanks to Jim, Julian, Judith, Howard, Tony, Marian, Herbie, Ali and Shane, who transformed the walkway at a cost of five small tins of gold metal paint, sugar soap and five paint brushes, just under £25.”

Shane Collins, a Somerset councillor for Frome who runs the group, said, “As central government funding for councils is reduced and the cost of children’s and adult social care goes up there is less to be spent on taking care of our streets. We can either complain or get active with our neighbours and friends and do it ourselves. As the climate heats and more land becomes inarable, food will increase in price and we will need to rely on our locality and each other much more in the future.”

  • Puppini Sisters to mark 20 years with Cheese & Grain show

The Puppini Sisters will celebrate their 20th anniversary with a special performance at the Cheese & Grain in Frome on Saturday, 23rd May.

Known for their ‘close harmonies, corsets and clever covers’, the trio were formed by Bologna-born Marcella Puppini at London’s Trinity College of Music. They made their breakthrough with debut album Betcha Bottom Dollar in 2006, which became the fastest-selling jazz debut in UK chart history.

“From festival stages to royal soirées, they have dazzled the world with their retro-glam style and genre-bending swing,” said Rob Dahl from the Cheese & Grain. “The world’s leading queens of vocal harmony, their sassy swing take on everything from Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy to Heart of Glass won over fans from Michael Bublé to King Charles.

“Their signature style, part Vivienne Westwood, part burlesque, helped spark the vintage revival.’

“Corsets were essential,” said Marcella. “We could see vintage booming, but even I didn’t expect it to get this big.”

  • Long-standing fete cancelled for second year

An annual fete which has raised funds for charity for more than 50 years has been cancelled for a second consecutive year.

The Frome Lions Club’s free family fun day was due to take place in June at Victoria Park. However, organisers said they have had to cancel the event again because key events and stallholders have dropped out.

Lion Mike Geake said, “We do not consider it viable to hold the event this year and have not taken this decision lightly.”

The long-running fete was also cancelled last year, following a request from Frome Town Council that participants do not leave vehicles in the park during events.

  • New studio takes working out to new heights with bungee fitness

A new fitness studio is turning exercise on its head - quite literally.

Velocity Bungee Fitness, based at Norbeck Enterprise Centre, Warminster offers classes using suspended bungee rigs that allow participants to jump, glide and exercise with reduced impact on their joints.

“The idea came from a desire to bring something genuinely different to the local fitness scene,” said owner Stacey Holborow. “It’s fun, inclusive and accessible to people who might not feel at home in a traditional gym.”

Stacey opened the studio after trying bungee fitness herself.

“After experiencing bungee fitness firsthand and seeing how empowering it could be, I knew it was something worth bringing to the local area,” she said.

“You’re harnessed to a bungee cord suspended from purpose-built rigging, which supports your weight and allows you to jump, glide and move in ways you simply can’t on the ground.
