Decrease in reported anti-social behaviour following police order

Reported incidents of anti-social behaviour in Frome have fallen this month after police were granted special powers to tackle problems in the town centre.

A rise in incidents in January and early February led Avon and Somerset Police to obtain additional powers under section 34 of the Anti-Social Behaviour Act for the weekend of 7th to 8th February in Frome. The powers allowed officers to issue dispersal orders, directing anyone likely to cause harassment, alarm, distress or contribute to crime and disorder to leave the area.

Following the exercise, the police say they have seen a reduction in reported incidents this month, with only five reported by 18th March. In comparison, 28 incidents were recorded in January and February.

Neighbourhoods’ Sergeant Daniel Jeffries said, “We received complaints from traders who have reported incidents which include people running in and out of shops, throwing chairs around some outlets, causing criminal damage and being verbally abusive and assaulting staff, which is unacceptable.

“We know our residents and businesses have concerns about anti-social behaviour and the significant disruption it can cause, which is why we are committed to keeping Frome safe.

“We encourage people to continue to report incidents like this, so we are aware of the scale of the problem and have a better understanding on what resources are need to tackle it.”
