New Frome College head faces scrutiny over suspension claims

A new interim principal has taken over at Frome College, with the school facing national attention over reports of 25 suspensions being issued during his first week. 

Dan Jeffries has taken on the leadership role, saying his priority is to ensure ‘every pupil receives excellent, disruption-free education in a safe and supportive environment.’ 

The college has attracted widespread national media coverage following reports that 25 suspensions were issued during the first week for issues including lateness, dress code infractions and, in one case, unzipping a bag too loudly. The reports followed complaints from parents on social media. 

The college has stated that it has received no formal complaints from parents regarding these claims.  

Mr Jeffries said, “Reports that pupils are suspended for lateness are entirely incorrect. Our policy is designed to support students: a first instance of lateness results in a simple warning, with detentions reserved only for persistent unpunctuality. Furthermore, pupils new to our school are given additional grace while they adjust to campus life. 

“To be clear, no pupil is ever suspended for minor infractions, such as minor dress code issues or lateness. We hold high expectations for behaviour, asking every student to work hard, be kind and do their best. These standards prepare young people for successful futures, and our role is to provide the structure and guidance to help them thrive. 

“My first weeks have been fantastic and the vast majority of our pupils, families, and staff have offered overwhelming support for this shared vision. While online rumours can create unnecessary worry, our door is always open. We strongly encourage any parent with questions, concerns, or feedback to contact the school directly so we can work together constructively.” 

Mr Jeffies continues to be executive headteacher for Selwood Academy and Berkley First School. 

Frome College was asked by Frome Times to confirm the number of suspensions issued during the first week of term but said no further comment would be provided.
