It’s time to co-operate: celebrating Co-operatives Fortnight

After a year of conflict and division, it’s time to co-operate. For Co-operatives Fortnight 2017 – which runs from 17th June to 1st July – people across the country will be asked to share stories of how working together has made a difference.

In Frome, Somerset Co-operative Services is bringing together members of local co-operatives to tell their stories – how they solved local problems through mutual aid. The event is taking place at the Cheese and Grain – itself run on co-operative lines – from 12.00 noon until 2.30pm, with a free lunch provided.

Other co-ops who will be represented include Freco, Frome’s renewable energy co-operative; Shared Earth Learning, a workers’ co-op providing outdoor education services for primary schools; Radstock Co-operative, which will next year celebrate its 150th birthday; Six Fingers and a Tail, a Glastonbury Housing co-op; and GO-OP, which is hoping to become the UK’s first co-operative train operator with services from Frome every two hours to Taunton and the Midlands.

Alex Lawrie, a local co-op development worker with Somerset Co-op Services said, “This event will be a great opportunity for anyone to find out more about the amazingly diverse and resourceful co-operative movement in the Mendips. We really hope people will be inspired to form their own co-operative social enterprises as a result!”

Co-operatives Fortnight is the co-operative sector’s national campaign, a two-week period when co-ops of all shapes and sizes take the opportunity to promote being a co-op.

For this year’s activity, supporters of co-operatives will be asking their staff, members, customers and friends, to share their stories of co-operation. The stories will be shared on social media like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using a shared hashtag – #coopstories – and automatically fed into a UK-wide website packed with inspiring stories.

A range of materials are available on the Co-operatives Fortnight website for individuals and co-operatives to join in the campaign, including logos, standard wording, a toolkit for getting involved and a series of images.

Ed Mayo, secretary general of Co-operatives UK, said, “We need co-operation and inspiration more than ever. So for this year’s Co-operatives Fortnight we’re asking people to join us in sharing their inspiring story of co-operation.”

  • Museum’s 60th anniversary open day to seek new volunteers

Volunteers are being sought to support a range of roles at Frome Museum as it marks six decades of sharing the town’s history.

Frome Museum is hosting an open day on Saturday 24th October to welcome new helpers and showcase its behind-the-scenes work.

The museum is run entirely by a group of over 50 volunteers. Throughout the open day, volunteers will be on hand to talk about what is involved in the museum, including exhibitions, children’s activities, reception, archives, collections, events, outreach, marketing, fundraising, research, copywriting, catalogue, IT and trustee activities.

  • Project marks decade of support for families

A community project in Frome has supported around 1,800 families over the past decade by providing toiletries and sanitary products to children and young people.

Frome Refresh was set up 10 years ago by former teacher Lesley Hooper after she heard about a similar project in Trowbridge and recognised the same need among families in Frome.

The scheme works with local schools to deliver essential supplies to families experiencing financial hardship.

  • Frome woman’s display raises awareness of baby loss

A display created by a Frome woman has given local people a place to remember babies who have died during pregnancy, birth or infancy, while opening up conversations about baby loss.

Charlotte Acerman, who works at The Cutting Bar in the Westway Precinct, invited anyone affected by baby loss to add a ribbon bearing their baby’s name to the display for Baby Loss Awareness Week.

Charlotte created the display after losing her own daughter, Cecilia-Grace, who died aged nine months. She said she wanted to give families a place to honour their babies and talk about their loss.

  • New scheme launched to secure future of Community Fridge

A scheme to keep the much-loved Community Fridge running for years to come has launched, with local people encouraged to take part.

The Community Fridge has started a ‘Friends of the Fridge’ scheme, where local people can sign up to contribute between £5 and £50 a month, helping to cover the everyday costs of keeping the fridge project running.

This includes essential equipment like cleaning supplies, staffing, food labels, upkeep and repairs and more.

  • Help shape Frome Town Council’s budget priorities

Residents are being asked to help decide what matters most when it comes to spending the money they contribute through council tax.

For the average household, council tax paid to Frome Town Council equates to around £4.72 a week, with 76% of households in council tax Bands A to C. As town councillors begin thinking about next year’s budget, they want to hear from local people about how that money should be spent and what priorities matter most to them.

Through the My Frome engagement platform, residents can take part in an interactive budgeting exercise and a short survey, helping councillors understand how people would balance spending across different areas of the council’s work and whether they feel it represents good value for money.

  • Mayor’s column

You will have noticed by now that I spend much of my time in this column celebrating our youth and their plans for the future.

I will do this throughout my year as mayor but will also reflect on memories of the town and how it has changed over the years. As someone whose family came to Frome in the early 1960s, I have seen much of this for myself but the town’s corporate memory is mostly held by Frome Museum.

Recently, I was pleased to attend the launch of a celebration marking 60 years of the museum. Exhibitions show the way it has developed in this time, from rooms in Church Steps to its impressive current home in North Parade. This building was originally the site of the Frome Literary and Scientific Institution. Originally this would have been a resource for the working people of Frome to improve their education and to socialise, but by the time I discovered it in the late 1970s it was somewhere only to play snooker!

Residents in East Woodlands have launched a community pledge scheme in the next move to save a historic pub in the village.

The Friends of the Horse and Groom have been campaigning to save the 300-year-old pub as an Asset of Community Value (ACV), which Somerset Council recently granted.

The listing was confirmed in late August, before the owner requested a review of the decision.

  • Somerset Council pledges greater transparency over asset sales

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

Somerset Council has pledged to be more transparent with the public over future sales of land, property and other public assets.

Since its creation in April 2023, the council has been selling off surplus land and property, including the commercial investments it inherited from the former district councils.
