Police are continuing to investigate a ‘suspicious’ fire which caused extensive damage to a derelict warehouse on the Saxonvale site.
The fire broke out at around 3.40pm on Wednesday 1st July at a warehouse on the site.
Fire crews, including Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, tackled the blaze, which caused extensive fire and smoke damage. The roof of the building collapsed during the incident, but no casualties were reported.
Avon and Somerset Police have said the fire is being treated as suspicious and an investigation is now underway. Officers are urging anyone with information or relevant CCTV footage to come forward.
Following the fire, Somerset Council carried out asbestos and structural surveys, which identified a small amount of debris in the neighbouring Lidl car park. A specialist asbestos contractor removed the debris on Friday 10th July.
A spokesperson for Somerset Council said, “The small amount of debris identified in the Lidl car park was assessed as presenting a very low risk and the specialist report concluded that no action was required. However, as an additional precaution and in agreement with Lidl, the council instructed a specialist asbestos contractor to remove any asbestos debris that may be present in the car park.
“The safety of residents, visitors and businesses remains our priority, and we will continue to take a cautious and responsible approach while the site is made safe with appropriate advice being issued to neighbouring sites.”
