Twelfth Night and Little Frankenstein at the Merlin

Twelfth Night, one of our favourite Shakespearian comedies, comes to the Merlin in a live theatre screening on Wednesday February 14th at 7.00 pm. Valentine’s Day seems particularly appropriate for this tale of mistaken identity, cross-dressing and unrequited love.

This RSC production, set and costumed in late Victorian England, and featuring Ade Edmondson as Malvolio, Kara Tointon as Olivia and Dinita Gohil as Viola, has been enthusiastically reviewed: “If music be the food of love, get ready to lick your lips: Christopher Luscombe’s RSC production of Shakespeare’s melancholy comedy sounds – and looks – sumptuous. Lavishly designed with a lush, romantic score, and stuffed with smart ideas. The wealth of detail is richly rewarding.” (The Times).

Forget the overcrowded restaurant and celebrate love in all its variety at the Merlin! Tickets £16, concessions £10.50.

There’s a half-term treat for everyone aged five to 105 on Saturday 17th February at 2.00pm when the Lempen Puppet Theatre Company presents Little Frankenstein – what will happen when puppeteer Frank Stein decides to abandon his falling-apart, traditional puppets and create a real, live one? Tickets are £7.50 adults, £5.50 children and a family ticket (2+2) is available for £21.

The Vicar of Dibley visits with evening performances on Saturday 24th, Sunday 25th, Monday 26th and Tuesday 27th of February, plus a 2.00pm matinee on the Saturday! See story on page 20.

  • Children wear purple for cancer counselling charity

Children at a primary school in Frome dressed in purple recently to raise money for a cancer counselling charity at risk of closure.

Pupils at St John’s First School took part in a special non-school uniform day with the theme of ‘A Splash of Purple’ and raised £239 for We Hear You (WHY). WHY launched an urgent appeal to raise £55,000 by the end of March, or face risk of closure.

Headteacher Nicole Simenton said, “It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces while raising a lovely amount of money to help WHY continue their important work supporting families in our community.

“The theme was a variation of ‘A Splash of Purple’, which WHY has organised across Frome in previous years; staff and children called it their own ‘Mini Splash of Purple.’ It brought out lots of creativity, with children proudly wearing everything from lavender leggings to bright violet hats and even a touch of sparkly face paint.”

  • From The Mayor

Life is all about listening and learning!

It is so easy to think that’s all about the young learning from the old, or beginners learning from those more experienced, but if we stop to listen, and actually hear, from those who are beginning their journey, it’s surprising what we can learn from an innocent perspective.

Often, we assume that the way we’ve always done things is the ‘tried and tested’ best approach, but on my rounds recently, I’ve come across some interesting examples that have challenged that thinking.

At Frome Town Council we begin the year with a pot of grant money, inviting applicants to apply for funding to help them grow. This year, we decided to shake things up a little. We asked students if they would like to create a youth grant panel to look specifically at applications from groups aimed at young people. They approached the task with vigour and excitement and were keen to apply rigorous standards to each submission, ensuring it was fit for purpose, well thought through, and appealed to a broad section of the community. It was certainly an example of great work and has already given us some ideas for the next major grants round. In fact, it was so successful, it’s going to be an annual occurrence.

  • Local schools team up for stronger future

Three local schools have entered a new shared leadership agreement designed to strengthen joint working, share expertise and provide stability in a changing education landscape.

Vallis First School and the schools from the Rode & Norton School Federation (RNSF) will continue to share an Executive Headteacher from September 2026.

The partnership creates opportunities for pupils and staff to connect across the schools. A recent friendly football match between pupils from Vallis First School and RNSF is one of many examples of the schools working together.

The collaboration builds on a successful two-year partnership between the schools and reflects a shared commitment to building resilience at a time of significant change across the education system.

  • Frome Wild Bunch Column – Spring is finally here bringing beauty and birdsong

Hi, this is Jo from the Wild Bunch.

Spring is finally here bringing beauty, birdsong and for me two annual conditions. I start putting wild garlic into absolutely every meal and I develop a sore neck from constantly looking up, waiting for one of my favourite birds to return – the swift.

I love swifts because they are truly unique. Sleeping, eating, bathing and even mating all happen on the wing. They rarely touch the ground. They are also the fastest birds in level flight, reaching speeds of up to 69mph. These summer visitors to the UK spend their winters in Africa, migrating around 3,400 miles twice a year, often stopping in Portugal and France to rest before arriving in the UK in mid-spring, usually early April. That’s when we hear their happy, screaming calls.

Swifts pair for life and return to the same nest site each year. If their nest is blocked or removed, they are unlikely to breed that season. They nest in houses, churches and older structures squeezing through tiny gaps to reach roof spaces. They lay just two to three eggs and don’t breed until they are around four years old. As buildings are renovated and gaps sealed, nest sites are disappearing. Combined with insect decline, this has led to swifts being added to the UK Red List of highest conservation concern in 2021.

  • Pupils look to the future for Aspirations Week

Pupils at a primary school in Frome explored future careers last month as part of the school’s Aspirations Week.

St Louis Catholic Primary School welcomed visitors including police officers, a pilot, a paramedic and the Mayor of Frome, to speak to the children about their jobs, the skills and school subjects that helped them get there and what they enjoy most about their work.

The children enjoyed trying on police hats, sitting in a patrol car, practising the recovery position with the paramedic and tackling fun challenges with a chartered accountant and mortgage advisor. A quarry specialist also brought toy trucks for pupils to practise with, combining learning with hands-on fun.

  • New book explores history of wildlife on the River Frome

The River Frome’s wild history is the subject of a new book by a local resident.

‘Somerset’s River Frome: the extraordinary natural history of a quiet English river’ has been a passion project for the last three years for Frome resident David Glasman.

The book charts the story of the animals, plants and fish that have lived in and around the river from before the end of the last Ice Age to the present day.

David, who has lived in Frome since 2016, said he fell in love with the river soon after he moved from Bristol.

  • Frome Museum reopens with new exhibitions and children’s area

Frome Museum has reopened after a winter of renovations, featuring more exhibition space, a larger interactive children’s area, a pop-up shop, and plans for its 60th anniversary celebrations in May.

Nearly 200 people, including 22 children, visited the museum on Sunday 1st March during the Frome Independent Market.

The museum, on North Parade, closed in December so volunteers could create additional exhibition space and expand the children’s area. A working party has also been preparing exhibitions for the 60th anniversary, with details to be announced.

One volunteer, Michelle Hylands, said the children’s area now offers a variety of activities. “We have colouring, books, play with artefacts, and a Brenda doll from the 1930s for dressing-up,” she said. “We’ve also created a discovery drawer with chalks, slates, and educational materials about the olden days. New fossils have been added that children can handle and identify.”

  • Major funding boost for Frome youth music project

A youth music project in Frome has secured £30,000 in new funding to help local young people to create and record music over the next two years.

The grant from the Youth Music Foundation builds on support from Coldplay, which donated £10,000 to fund studio sessions for young people after rehearsing at the Cheese and Grain last year.

“When Coldplay rehearsed at the Cheese and Grain last year the band was so impressed with the venue it donated £10,000 to enable local young people to create and record music in the venue’s recording studio on selected Sundays,” said Cheese and Grain Director Steve Macarthur.

“Now the Youth Music Foundation is providing a further £30,000 to continue the work over another two years. Young people will be able to plan and shape how the project will run.”

  • Art society invites new members to join

An art society in Frome, founded 47 years ago, is encouraging new members to join the group.

Frome Art Society was founded in 1979 by Charles and Vera Appleyard and their friend Charles Hopkins. They wanted to encourage local people to get involved in learning about, making and appreciating art.

Today, the society continues to work towards those aims by running a programme of events including practical workshops, talks and demonstrations, exhibitions, outdoor painting days and a weekly Friday morning social drop-in creative session.

A member of the society, Lavinia Mitchell, said, “As a non-profit organisation, Frome Art Society is unique in that it gives local people from Frome and surrounding areas an opportunity to participate in a variety of very affordable activities throughout the year. These include drop-in coffee mornings, workshops, outdoor painting days and exhibitions open to all members, regardless of experience."
