Frome Twinning Association held their first family event last week, themed on a traditional Polish celebration.
About 30 children and their families took part in the event called ‘Topienie Marzanny’, which involved Polish paper-cutting and making spring hats.
Families and adults passing by were able to buy Polish biscuits and cakes. There was then a procession along the riverside path, led by the town crier and his wife. Marzanna, the winter witch (as a straw effigy), was also launched into the river, to signify the end of winter and the start of spring.
This is an event celebrated all over Poland and was a celebration of Frome’s links with Rabka-Zdrój.
Justin Worringham, chair of the twinning association said, “ This was the first of three family events planned this year to celebrate our links with towns in Poland, France and Germany.
“It was great to see people coming together to enjoy this Polish tradition, and introducing children to the culture of one of our twin towns. Later in the year we will celebrate Bastille Day, with a variety of French activities, and St Nicholas Day, with German and Polish traditions.”
