  • New Frome College head faces scrutiny over suspension claims A new interim principal has taken over at Frome College, with the school facing national attention over reports of 25 suspensions being issued during his first week. Dan Jeffries has taken on the leadership role, saying his priority is to ensure ‘every pupil receives excellent, disruption-free education in a safe and supportive environment.’ The college has attracted widespread national media coverage following reports that 25 suspensions were issued during the first week for issues including lateness, dress code infractions and, in one case, unzipping a bag too loudly. The reports followed complaints from parents on social media. The college has stated that it has received no formal complaints from parents regarding these claims. Mr Jeffries said, “Reports that pupils are suspended for lateness are entirely incorrect. Our policy is designed to support students: a first instance of lateness results in a simple warning, with detentions reserved only for persistent unpunctuality. Read more on our website.   • MP explains decision to vote in favour of assisted dying Bill Frome MP Anna Sabine has explained her decision to vote in favour of legalising assisted dying, saying she believes terminally ill adults should have the right to choose how and when their life ends. The House of Commons voted against the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill on Friday 11th September, with 286 MPs voting against and 270 in favour. The Bill proposed allowing terminally ill adults in England and Wales to request assistance to end their own lives, subject to safeguards. MPs were given a free vote on the issue, meaning they were not required to vote along party lines. Explaining her decision, Anna said, “I know this is an issue many of you feel strongly about, on both sides, and I wanted to take another moment to explain why I voted in the way that I did. “I chose again to vote in favour of the Bill.   • Frome tutor revamps popular local history course One of the longest-serving tutors for Frome Community Education is revamping his most popular course for the autumn. David Lassman has been running a local history course for the not-for-profit educational organisation since 2012 but says the time has come to overhaul it. Frome Community Education is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. David said, “The course on the town’s history has become very popular over the years and has now established itself as a major part of the heritage landscape. “Many of those who have participated on it have gone on to key roles in local heritage organisations such as Frome Society for Local Study and the Frome Museum. “At the same time, others have gone on to have research undertaken while on the course published either in journals or full-length books.   • New season of free communication skills workshops A local community group aimed at helping residents navigate tricky conversations is running a new season of free autumn workshops at Frome Town Hall. Let’s Talk equips people with practical, productive communication techniques to handle tricky conversations. Running monthly from September through November, the workshops will take place from 6.30pm to 8pm. Each session focuses on specific communication skills, ranging from pausing and reflecting to understanding how psychological scripts cause repetitive, unhealthy relationship patterns Sheila Gore of Let’s Talk said, “We’ve all been there; there’s a tension you want to resolve but you can’t quite figure out how to have the conversation. It can sometimes even feel easier to just avoid it altogether. Handled in the right way, a difficult conversation can help you to work through conflict, resolve tensions and improve relationships.   • Volunteer meeting for Frome’s Christmas event Volunteers are invited to meet with the organisers of Frome’s annual Christmas Get-Together to learn more about how to get involved. Anyone interested in helping out is invited to drop by the cafe at the Cheese and Grain on Saturday 19th September, from 3.30pm to 4.30pm, to meet the organisers and discover how they can get involved. Organisers say, “Summer may only just be on its way out, but organisers of Frome’s Christmas Get-Together are already hard at work planning the free lunch on Christmas Day for anyone who is on their own or would like company.   • ‘Fete of ideas’ to explore Frome’s identity A free, one-day event exploring the identity, future and community spirit of Frome will be held at Silk Mill on Saturday 19th September. The venue will be transformed into ‘The ForEm’—a pop-up fete featuring a mix of ideas, live performances, games, films, and original artworks from 10am to 6pm. Created by local artist Kate Keara Pelen, the event forms part of a collaboration with the University of Glasgow’s Civic Imaginary Partnerships research project. Commissioned to turn academic research into an interactive experience, Kate’s creative design uses playful installations to ask local residents three key questions: What makes Frome, Frome? What do we value and who gets to shape the town? What might we do differently in the future? Dr Michael Howcroft, Civic Imaginaries project lead at the University of Glasgow, said, “We commissioned Kate to work with us because we didn’t want someone simply to illustrate a research report. She has spent time with the research, with us and with some of our participants.   • Council sets aside £1.77m for Saxonvale fire costs By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby with additional reporting by Frome Times Somerset Council has set aside £1.77 million to cover any costs associated with the fire at the Saxonvale site in July. More than 100 firefighters tackled a fire at the ‘western warehouse’ at Saxonvale on 1st July, which caused extensive damage to the building. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service later confirmed the fire was being treated as suspicious. At a meeting of Somerset Council’s executive in August, it was confirmed that £1.77m of ‘unallocated contingency’ funding had been moved into a new reserve to “fund any costs relating to the recent fire”.   • From Roman Britain to Rebecca: New courses for Autumn at Frome Community Education Frome Community Education’s Autumn term gets underway on 21st September, and booking is already open with courses selling fast. Alongside its existing programme of Arts & Crafts, Languages, Words & Literature, History & Culture and Health & Wellbeing courses, there are a whole crop of brand-new courses this term - from Roman Britain and Frome’s own literary past to new language classes, poetry and the meditative art of Vedic chant.   • Monthly charity bingo sessions for family support Charity bingo sessions will run at The Key Centre every month to raise funds for Purple Elephant Family Support. The sessions are organised and run by Frome resident and bingo fan Elizabeth Ayers and will take place on the last Wednesday of the month. Elizabeth said, “I’ve always wanted to run bingo for the local community and I’d also like to support a local charity, especially one that does so much for children. This seemed like the perfect way to combine a social community event, raise some money for Purple Elephant and show our family’s deep respect and gratitude for all the support we have received so kindly from local healthcare services.” The event includes refreshments, locally donated raffle prizes and cash bingo prizes. Proceeds from the raffle and refreshments will be donated to Purple Elephant Family Support to support its year-round services, which help families overcome their challenges.
