Frome stonemason, Stephen Barker, is supporting local charity Active and In Touch, by setting himself a 500km rowing challenge over the course of 100 days.
The charity report, “Stephen, aged 52, was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and this prompted him to make a positive change in his lifestyle. He started to follow both a healthy diet and a fitness regime, which resulted not only in him losing an amazing three stone, but also in his diabetes being diagnosed as in remission.
“Stephen began his challenge on 21st February. He decided upon identifying A&IT as his charity of choice having heard about the good work it was carrying out through his local Frome Masonic Lodge and also from the personal experience of a friend at Affinity Gym who told him how the charity had helped a family member.”
Stephen said, “The last year has been difficult for many, especially those who are alone. I am currently raising money for a local charity who helps the more vulnerable in the community”.
Thanking Stephen on behalf of A&IT, community fundraiser, Tracey Rawlins said, “Support like this can ensure we can continue helping more people”.
A&IT supports adults in Frome and the local villages who have become isolated and lonely through a variety of circumstances. Maybe they have been supporting a partner for many years, have moved to a new area, have specific mental health needs or are not feeling confident about trying new things alone.
With the help of matched volunteer befrienders and a programme of events throughout the year, A&IT makes a real difference. It also provides community transport with volunteer drivers and a “Shop For Me” scheme.
Stephen’s target is £1,000 and he has already raised in excess of £700. If you would like to support Stephen in his rowing endeavour and wish to donate to this fundraising challenge please visit https://localgiving.org/fundraising/stephens500kmchallenge/
As a growing charity, Active and In Touch is currently seeking additional trustees. They say, “If you are interested in joining the charity in this capacity and would like to find out more please contact enquiries@ activeandintouch.org. We would love to hear from you!”
