IN a challenging year for Frome’s football teams, the girls’ and women’s teams have enjoyed a strong end to their season with a bright future beckoning for all age groups for next season and beyond.
Frome Town United’s under 15 girls’ team, playing in the Mid Wiltshire League, overcame a number of injuries and other set-backs to win three from their last six matches, including a fantastic 4-3 home win over Abbey Meads of Swindon and a 4-1 win away to Marlborough in their final game, and scoring an impressive 20 goals across those six games.
Playing in the highly competitive Mid Wiltshire Girls’ League, the under 13 girls finished their season with a fantastic 5-0 win over local rivals Trowbridge Wonderers; a great victory coming off the back of a run of close matches since the league returned from lockdown in April, showing how well the team has developed.
It’s also been a season that has seen the younger end of Frome Town United girls grow and grow with the Somerset FA backed Wildcats programme attracting more and more 6 to 11 year old girls to come and take part in weekly football fun with the club.
Head of Girls’ Football Ben Bolland reflected on a positive end to the season, “It’s been a season of many challenges on and off the pitch for the club, the players and their families. So it’s fantastic to see both our junior girls’ teams finishing the season so strongly – massive well done to all the players.
“There are loads of positives now falling into place that will support these girls to go from strength to strength; a newly formed club at Frome Town United, a new pitch at the Old Golf Course, trusted sponsors stepping up and providing us with new kits for next season, more and more girls joining the club, Wildcats going from strength to strength and more volunteers now involved in supporting the girls to play football.”
At the senior end, Frome Town Women’s team finished the season on a five-game unbeaten run, in a series of friendly matches since their league season was ended early (with the team sitting second in their division) due to the national lockdown.
This season, Frome Women’s have strengthened their squad and gone from strength to strength playing positive, attacking football.
Head coach of Frome Women’s Justin Paget said, “The end of another season, which due to the lock down looked like we wouldn’t get back on the pitch this season. But we managed to get five games played. The squad is going from strength to strength we’ve got a good mixture of players who work well together not only on the pitch but also off it. The connection with Ben who’s come on board to help out with the coaching & Frome Town United is already working with a few players already training with the senior squad which can only be positive for the coming seasons.”
