TW Frome businesses have won silver awards in this year’s South West Fairtrade Business Awards.
The awards were presented in Bristol City Hall by The Guardian ethical expert Lucy Siegle.
Coffee Station, situated right next to Frome railway station uses coffee from Easy Jose that is ethically sourced and fair-trade. All their teas, sugar, bananas and nuts are Fairtrade, the hot chocolate is single estate sourced and all the chocolate, cocoa powder and molasses used in the cooking are also Fairtrade.
Jo Harrington who runs the Coffee Station is also well known for her founding of the annual Chocolate Festival in Frome, which also strongly encourages Fairtrade.
Jeweller, Christina Oswin, was the other Frome business to win a silver award. Christina has been ethical from the outset of her business, beginning by using recycled silver and gold and ensuring that rubies and spinel are ‘fairmined’. Then, in 2013, she was accredited with a full licence to offer jewellery made from Fairtrade and Fairmined gold. Christina now has a Fairtrade collection called ‘Treasured’.
Fairtrade Frome is over the moon to have two independent businesses from Frome recognised in the awards that attract nominations from all over the south West from Cornwall up to Gloucestershire. It was a fitting celebration of Fairtrade Fortnight.
![Town-wide programme brings month of social activities in May
A month-long programme of activities and events is set to take place across the town in May as part of an initiative encouraging residents to connect with themselves, each other and local places.
The scheme, Frome Connects, will run throughout the month and includes a mix of social activities, creative events and informal meet-ups in community spaces.
Highlights include the return of Dress Up Fridays, which began during lockdown and invites people to wear formal clothing or fancy dress and turn the town into their catwalk each Friday.
Set-piece moments include a Kate Bush-themed flashmob (Running Up That [Catherine] Hill) on 30th May, followed by a bell peal at St John’s Church where the bells will play Running Up That Hill.
There will also be a whole-town drone photo on Friday 30th May, with everyone encouraged to ‘look up’ at around 12.30pm.
