Morag McLaren - new patron of the Frome Festival.
Morag McLaren – new patron of the Frome Festival.

FROME Festival is delighted to announce the appointment of Morag McLaren,  founder and creative director of The Cooper Hall Foundation, as its patron.

The festival’s first patron, from 2001 to 2007, was Pamela, Lady Harlech. There has been a vacancy from 2007 to the present time. The Board agreed to invite Morag to take on this honorary role in recognition of her outstandingly generous contributions to the festival since Cooper Hall opened two years ago.  Responding to Morag’s appointment, Martin Dimery, creative director of the festival, had the following comments to make on her new position. He said, “The Frome Festival has enjoyed a wonderful relationship with Cooper Hall since it opened last year thanks to the hard work of Morag McLaren and Fay Goodridge, associate director.

“We are delighted that Morag, who is a performer of great distinction, has accepted our invitation to become patron of the Frome Festival. We are very lucky that she has chosen to live and work in Frome.”

Robert Morris, chairman of trustees of the Frome Festival, also welcomed Morag to the position of patron with great warmth. He said, “Ever since the opening of Cooper Hall during, and as part of, the Frome Festival 2012, Morag has been a most generous and joyful supporter.

“The festival trustees have invited her to become our patron and we are delighted that she has accepted. Cooper Hall, with Morag’s welcoming presence, has already brought outstanding performances and programmes.”

Morag herself had the following words to say on her appointment, “The first performance presented at Cooper Hall in July 2012 was an event organised by Frome Festival and its resounding success set a standard that continues to give us a sense of purpose and focus in our programme planning that has unquestionably helped to launch Cooper Hall as a local venue.

“I never imagined, a year down the line from that first concert, that we would be co-producing an opera at the next Frome Festival, hosting an eclectic mix of musical events, and feeling part of the dedicated team that make the festival happen.

“Not only did this bring its artistic rewards and audience satisfaction, but – in a very short space of time – has given me the opportunity to make valuable friendships and introduce myself, and our venue, to the community.

“My personal professional experience as a performer and producer has given me an awareness of the huge amount of work and financial considerations that go into running a festival, especially one with the range of choice that Frome offers and sustains.

“I am driven now, at this stage in my career, to provide as many performing opportunities as I can in a world where live performance in the Arts is all too often undermined, undervalued and certainly underfunded. I therefore wholeheartedly support the Frome Festival to this end in any way I can, and take great pleasure in accepting the position of patron.”

  • Frome Partner Towns Column – Discover Pieve di Soligo

Welcome to the third in a series of articles introducing Frome’s four partner towns, formerly known as twin towns.

These partnerships offer opportunities to share sport, art, culture and more and make lifelong friends. This week it’s the turn of our newest partner, Pieve di Soligo in northern Italy.

Pieve di Soligo became the fifth town to join our partnership in June 2025, along with Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne, France; Murrhardt, Germany and Rabka Zdrój, Poland.

The administration of Murrhardt made the initial link and invited a delegation from Pieve di Soligo to Murrhardt to discuss the new partnership. The formal accord was signed in Pieve di Soligo on 2nd June 2025.

Pieve di Soligo is in the Veneto Region in northern Italy, about one hour’s car journey north of Venice. It has around 12,000 inhabitants.

A Frome fundraiser has raised more than £1,000 for a local MS therapy centre at her annual cake sale.

Funds raised at Katherine’s event will go directly towards supporting the centre’s vital services, which provide therapies, health information and emotional support to people living with multiple sclerosis and other neurological conditions. The centre also supports families and carers across the region.

  • Frome woman campaigns over planned disability transport changes

A wheelchair user in Frome is warning that planned changes to a national vehicle leasing scheme could leave disabled people unable to work or access their communities.

Kay Millar says proposed changes to mileage limits and charges will make it unaffordable for many users who rely on adapted vehicles for daily life and employment.

She has used a wheelchair since the age of 12 and says the changes, due to take effect from 1st July, could put her own job and independence at risk.

The Motability Scheme, which enables disabled people to lease vehicles, is introducing changes to new leases following government tax changes announced last autumn, which it says have increased running costs.

  • Historic promotion for Frome Netball Club

Frome Netball Club has secured a historic promotion to Regional League 3 for the first time in the club’s 75-year history.

They sealed their promotion via the play-offs on Sunday 7th June which saw five teams competing for two available places, with matches played in short formats of ten minutes each way.

Team member Freya Kingsley reports, “It had been a long and tiring road to this day, but finally the opportunity to reach a regional league was upon on. This isn’t just a huge opportunity for the players, but Frome Netball club, founded by June Barnes in 1950, has never got to regional play offs before. Success today would put little old Frome on the netball map.

“With five teams vying for two spots the pressure was on. Our opponents were a combination of other county champions and those trying to retain their position within RL3.

  • Bike hire scheme aims to boost car-free travel

Residents and visitors are being encouraged to swap four wheels for two thanks to the expanding bike hire scheme offered by Frome Community Bike Project.

The community initiative provides a range of affordable cycling options, including electric bikes, on-street hire bikes and a cargo bike, making it easier for people to get around town, run errands and explore the local area sustainably.

The scheme includes a fleet of e-bikes available for short- and long-term hire, allowing riders to tackle Frome’s hills with ease. For quick journeys around town, five on-street hire bikes can be booked via a smartphone app and collected from locations opposite Frome Station and outside Frome Library.

A community cargo bike is also available, giving residents the opportunity to carry shopping, transport children or move larger items without relying on a car.
