Activities on the Mary Baily field and a chance to talk about the space

Frome Town Council are offering free family activities and a wildlife mapping session with the Wild Bunch on the Mary Baily field on Saturday 28th September from 1pm to 5pm, alongside a skate jam from Frome Skatepark Project’s Skate Jam.

The Fair Frome Tribe and friends will also perform on the bandstand in Victoria Park from 2pm, and the community café will be open for refreshments throughout the day.

The event has a dual purpose: like the pop-up events at the Old Showfield earlier this year, the FTC team are in the park to speak to residents about the things they like about Victoria Park and the Mary Baily field, and anything they’d like to change, add or improve.

Cllr Mark Dorrington said, “Victoria Park is a popular and well-used space and we want to maintain that, while thinking about ways it could be even better. Our engagement officers’ recent work with schools showed that, sadly, not everyone feels safe in Victoria Park, so that’s one of the things we’d like to explore.

“Alongside FTC’s free activities for younger residents, the Skatepark Project team are keen to showcase the fun and entertainment to be had from skating or wheeling on the ramps. Our Environment team have some ideas to share about additional seating, spaces aimed at encouraging girls and older children to use the space, tree planting and more, but this is your park and as with the Showfield, nothing is set in stone.

“Come down and have your say, or if you can’t make it, share your thoughts and ideas via our survey,” he added.

Frome Wild Bunch member and resilience officer Jo Morris said, “Come and find out more about Frome’s Community Wildlife Mapping Project and how you can help to record your observations of nature and assist Somerset Environmental Record Centre (SERC) monitor biodiversity. You aren’t just doing your bit to help, it’s a lot of fun, too and makes you more aware and mindful of the wonderful nature we see around us, and how precious it is.”

The Skatepark Project’s Skate Jam runs from 1pm to 5pm on Saturday 28th September, alongside free, fun activities including a wildlife mapping project featuring the iNaturalist app with Frome Wild Bunch, and an opportunity to discuss and influence plans for the Mary Baily Field and Victoria Park.  A live music gig on Victoria Park bandstand runs from 2pm.

Residents can share their thoughts about the park by phone to 01373 465757, email to engage@frometowncouncil.gov.uk or via an online survey at https://bit.ly/mary-baily-survey.

  • Catherine Hill shop to close after 18 years

A shop that has been a staple on Catherine Hill for the last 18 years is due to close next month.

World Basket, which sells a selection of antique, vintage and contemporary rugs and cushions sourced from around the world, will close on 1st March to spend more time on buying expeditions.

Peter Cox, a partner at World Basket, said, “We’ve really enjoyed trading on the hill for the last 18 years, but have decided we don’t need the six days-a-week commitment in the shop. We will be able to spend more time on buying expeditions, a part of our business we really enjoy. We would like to thank all of the customers who have visited our shop over the years. Our last day will be Sunday 1st March, for the Frome Independent Market.”

World Basket will continue trading on its website, www.worldbasket.co.uk, and at various textile shows in London.

A free prostate cancer support event will take place later this month, to bring clinical advice and community support to those who need it.

The event will take place on Saturday 28th February from 11am to 1pm at Thomas Arnold Hall in Warminster School.

Marion Barton, Chair of Open Door Warminster, who has organised the event, will discuss the benefits of joining a local group. She will be joined by current members who will share their personal experiences to help demystify the journey.

Open Door operates a regular prostate support group, every second and fourth Monday of the month from 7pm until 8.30pm at the Warminster Athenaeum.

  • Historian to deliver talk on Victorian estate

Architectural historian Julian Orbach will return to Frome to give a talk to the Frome Society on Wiltshire’s little-known great Victorian estate at Grittleton.

Julian will return on Saturday 21st February, to talk about Grittleton, which spans across the M4 near Castle Combe.

Organisers say, “In 1828, Philip Rundell, silversmith to Queen Victoria, died and left £900,000 to his great nephew, Joseph Neeld. He bought the Grittleton Estate and the manor of Chippenham and devoted his life to rebuilding the house and the villages of Grittleton, Alderton, Leigh Delemere and Sevington, which comprised his estate. Julian will describe the extraordinarily rich high Victorian style of the architecture employed in designing the house, with layers of balconies under coffered ceilings of blue, white and gold, contrasting with the much simpler, but still very generous cottages on the estate, each with a large garden and pigsty."
