An animation show featuring Oscar-winning artists opened at Frome’s renowned contemporary art gallery, Black Swan Arts, on Saturday 14th May – the show continues until 11th June.
The exhibition, curated by David Daniels, features the work of a group of award-winning animators who work using a variety of techniques, from hand-drawn images on paper to digital drawing, 3D computer and stop-frame animation.
The show includes a series of finished animations, alongside the development work involved in the production of the films, including original sketches, storyboards, character designs and animatics. The aim is to shed light on how an idea originates, is developed and finally makes it onto the screen.
The majority of the films are independent productions, frequently financed by the animators themselves, and they have all been shown at international animation festivals, including Anima Mundi, Annecy and the British Animation Awards.
Featured animators include Oscar winner Daniel Greaves, Simon Tofield of Simon’s Cat fame, David Daniels who has designed animations and projections for Led Zeppelin and Bryan Adams stage shows, British Animation Award winner Jon Dunleavy, Emma Burch, Chris Gavin, Sam Campbell, Peter Baynton, Xingru Dong and Vida Verga, as well as work from students on the BA graphic communication course at Bath Spa University.
David Daniels will be giving a talk about the work on show and the animators involved on Thursday 19th May at 7.30pm. There will also be a workshop for children aged eight and over on Saturday 4th June from 2.00–4.00pm (cost £5).
