WITH almost £28,000 raised for this year’s Poppy Appeal, organisers have praised the generosity of communities in Frome and surrounding areas.
A total of £27,850 has been raised so far – but with some donations still expected, organisers are hoping to surpass the £28,000 mark,
Poppy Appeal organiser and member of the Frome Branch Royal British Legion, Richard Fry said, “May I, through your newspaper, let the people of Frome and District know how once again they have shown that our town is a generous supporter of good causes, as well as being a great place to live.
“The annual Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal is the main source of income for the Legion. It provides very much needed help and support to serving and ex-service personnel as well as their families all year round, and not just in November when we all remember the sacrifices others have given.
“This year, I was asked to be the Frome District Poppy Appeal organiser, taking over from Maggy Daniel who had, for the previous eight years, developed and led a fantastic team of helpers, which has really put Frome on the map as a significant contributor to the nationwide appeal.
“I am pleased to advise that this year the total donated so far has reached £27,850. However we are aware that there are still some donations to arrive and so we are hopeful of raising over £28,000. This figure is a tremendous result, particularly taking into consideration that previous years have commemorated the start and end of the Great War, stirring a great deal of public interest. This demonstrates that the public in and around Frome are still very much aware of the need to help those who have served their country.
“I would like to publicly thank all of the people who helped and supported me in my first year, and also to all who took in a poppy box and collecting tin. Many thanks must also go to the Frome Town Cricket Club for their tremendous support to the whole Frome poppy team.
“If you were unable to get involved this year, but would like to do so in any way in future years, please contact the local branch secretary via frome.secretary@rbl.community.”
