FROME Society for Local Study’s annual lecture programme starts again next month.
The autumn 2022 /spring 2023 programme begins with ‘Nature’s Favourite Child: Thomas Robins and the Art of the Georgian Garden.’
The lecture, given by Dr Cathryn Spence, will take place on Saturday 8th October.
As with all the lectures, it will begin at 2.30pm at the Assembly Rooms (at the rear of the Memorial Theatre).
The lectures are free for FSLS members, while visitors pay £3 for lectures in 2022 and £5 for those in 2023.
Later in the month is the Katherine Ashworth Memorial Lecture, which is named for the benefactor who bequeathed her house to the society in return for a single rose to be placed on her grave each mid-summer’s day.
This highlight of the lecture programme takes place on Saturday 22nd October and is to be given by Dr Patricia Smith.
Dr Smith will talk about the famous Cruse Map, created in 1813, which is being published by the society next year in its most significant publishing project since ‘Woad To This’, by Carolyn Griffiths, back in 2017.
Other lectures within the programme include Dr Amy Jeffs and Lisa Kenwright discussing Amy’s books ‘Storyland’ and ‘Wild’, Gary Kearley on the Frome Tunnels and Yvette Staelens talking about Folk Carols in the West Country.
There will also be talks on the Theatre Royal in Bath, the City’s Stone Mines, and The Roman Experience at the Newt in Somerset. The latter lecture being given by Ric Weeks.
