Organisers have declared the fourth annual Frome Half Marathon a resounding success, after a record 815 runners ran through the streets of the town.
The event, held on Sunday 19th July, has grown in popularity and saw an increase in runners in the half marathon, 10k and 5k distances, as well as in the junior 1k run which saw over 100 children take part. The half marathon was won by Wells City Harriers athlete Frank Tickner in 1:11:14. Laura Holton of local team Affinity Wellbeing was first female in 1:33:26.
Event organiser Esther Doel said, “The atmosphere was buzzing, with musicians providing entertainment and encouragement along the route. A barbecue, ice creams and massages for runners were enjoyed in the race village.
“Local residents once again showed tremendous support for the event, lining the streets to cheer on the runners. The organisers would like to thank the public for their cooperation during the disruption caused by the morning’s road closures.
“The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive – particularly for our marshalls. The runners really appreciated all the hard work the marshalls put in to keep the route safe for them and to support them and encourage them while they are running.
“The event was made possible by the support of many local people, businesses and groups. Volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure the event ran smoothly on the day, along the route and in the race village, and for months leading up to the event.”
Local boy Dillon Chapman started the race and presented the prizes. Dillon himself has inspired many through his charity work with Make-a-Wish Foundation.
First man over the line in the 5k was William Laye in a time of 17:50. The first female was Esther Rootes in 23:48.
The 10k was won by Oliver Fox in 32:36. Winning lady was Claire Blewitt in 42:24.
This year the half marathon also included the extra challenge of King and Queen of the Mountain, a timed section that took runners from the bottom to the top of Egford Hill. Frank Tickner was crowned King in a time of 3:08, whilst Kate Hails achieved 4:28 to be crowned Queen.
The main event sponsors were Sound Foundation Community Care, Care UK, Gracewell Healthcare, Old Mill, CH Contracting and H&B Tyres.
