Do you or your children enjoy getting creative? Have you produced an amazing piece of art that you would you like to see displayed in a local gallery?
There is still time for budding young artists to enter the prestigious fourth Young Open competition, the hugely successful arts event for school age children at Frome’s Black Swan Arts.
Since 2013, more than 500 children aged between eight and 19 from more than 150 different schools in the region have entered original pieces of art, including paintings, sculpture, jewellery, ceramics, drawings, textiles and prints – in fact, any form of creative art is welcome.
In each age category, 8–11 years, 12–15 years and 16–19 years, there will be four winners and four highly commended awards. Each winner will receive a tailored one-to-one workshop with a professional local artist from one of a range of disciplines, including ceramics, printmaking, felting, digital media or sculpture.
This year the Young Open is being sponsored by the Ernest Cook Trust, a leading outdoor educational charity which encourages young people to learn from the land through a range of hands-on outdoor learning activities.
The Simon King Wild-life Project is also endorsing the competition. Simon King said, “I’m thrilled to support the Black Swan Arts Young Open competition by donating a wildlife garden item as a prize. I’m particularly keen to encourage entries from individuals and schools within Frome and the local villages, as there is so much creative inspiration in the countryside around us.”
The exhibition takes place at Black Swan Arts from Saturday 12th March to Saturday 9th April. Visitors will also have an opportunity to play an active part in the competition by voting for their favourite artwork in the People’s Choice award and winning for themselves a prize of some Black Swan vouchers.
The entry fee is £5 and the deadline for entries is Wednesday 24th February. Full details are available at: www.blackswan.org.uk/youngopen16
