PENLEIGH Farm has opened a traditional butchers on Stony Street in Frome, selling high quality, fresh local meat.
The farm based in Dilton Marsh has had a successful meat counter in the Co-op supermarket for five years but decided it was time to bring their products to the high street.
Owen Singer who runs the farm said, “It’s been a bit hectic getting things ready for the opening but since we first opened, it’s been absolutely brilliant. We decided not to have a grand opening because we wanted to get our feet under the table and ease ourselves in. It’s all very new for us, so we didn’t want lots of people to descend upon us and not be able to deliver.
“We’ve moved away from prepackaged meat as we’re trying to use less plastic packaging, we use wax paper wrapping which can be recycled.
“All the lamb and pork comes from our farm in Dilton Marsh and the poultry and beef is sourced from local farmers no further than a 28-mile radius; it’s important to us to support local farmers. Also, when you visit us, you can get advice from our butcher, Derek, but also you can speak to me, the farmer who has looked after the animals on the farm.
“We feel immensely proud of what we’ve achieved, especially when you hear the lovely comments from the customers. I think people are pleased to see a traditional butchers back on the high street.
“We are thrilled to be on Stony Street. It’s such a vibrant street with lots of things to offer. There’s a great mix of independent shops and with the arrival of Sam’s Kitchen and Melanie Giles expanding, it’s an exciting time for Frome’s shops. It’s so important to support independent businesses, if you want them to stay, you’ve got to use them!
“It’s been a lot of hard work but we’re really pleased with how the shop looks. We’ve had lovely comments about the decoration which is down to my amazing wife Sloany. She designed and decorated the shop and it looks amazing. There have been lots of comments about the pheasant wallpaper!
“Thank you to all our customers who have come up the hill to see us and for all the support. We look forward to seeing you all very soon.”
