Frome Town made the long midweek journey to Cambridge City on 18th March.
In an entertaining, end to end match, they took the lead twice through Ollie Taylor and Matt Smith, but in the end were pleased with a point as goalkeeper Darren Chitty produced an inspired performance to keep the hosts out towards the end.
After the original Saturday fixture has been postponed due to a water logged pitch just as the Frome coach arrived, there were to be no pitch problems tonight, and the side showed several changes from the home defeat by Cirencester, with Chris McGrath taking the place of Anthony Tonkin, Brandon Mundy coming in place of the injured Jon Vance and Kris Miller starting instead of Ricky Hulbert.
As the match kicked off, it was all Frome in first 10 minutes as they took the game to the hosts, but with no chances arriving, it was Cambridge who went closest after 15 minutes, as Josh Dawkin escaped down the left and swung in a low cross that Chris Bacon just failed to reach at the far post.
Five minutes later, Frome opened the scoring as Rhys Baggridge played a great ball over the top to Ollie Taylor who turned inside Lee Chaffey and drilled a low shot under Zac Barrett from just inside the penalty area.
Inspired by the goal, Frome went looking for their second and Lewis Haldane and Matt Smith both had shooting chances but failed to find the target, and then against the run of play, the hosts equalised as Danny Kelly’s shot from 20 yards took a deflection off of a defender leaving Darren Chitty helpless.
This match was always threatening more goals, and Frome duly obliged in the 50th as Smith drove forward and set Haldane free and his chipped cross to the far post where Taylor rose to head back across goal for Smith to head home and make it 2-1 to Frome.
But the lead only lasted for a couple of minutes and Buster Harradine equalised with a shot from 20 yards as Frome failed to clear their lines, and as the match turned into an even faster, end to end affair, Chitty made another superb save in the 59th to deny Harradine his second of the night.
With the number of Frome walking wounded getting larger as the match progressed, Chitty turned on the sort of performance that he seems to be able to do when the chips are down, and superb saves from Harradine in the 78th and an incredible full stretch save to deny Andrew Phillips two minutes later earned him the H&B Tyres Man of the Match award.
