RESIDENTS who live near The Butts have launched a campaign for a safer crossing, labelling the road as a ‘tragedy waiting to happen.’
An online petition, organised by local Vicki Farley-Love, asks Somerset County Council to provide a safer road crossing, from Water Lane to Somerset Road via The Butts.
Vicki says, “Where we would like the crossing to go is a very residential part of Frome, with many families living either side of The Butts. At the moment crossing this road is unsafe. Throughout the day there is a constant flow of traffic, people using this road are driving cars, motorbikes, heavy goods vehicles, buses, lorries and more. This high level of traffic makes waiting to cross and crossing The Butts dangerous.
“There is a high level of pedestrian use, as there are a number of schools either side of this busy main road. On one side there is The Steiner Academy, Oakfield Academy, Critchill School and on the other, Christ Church school. All of these schools have a high intake and lots of these children are having to cross The Butts daily. So we as a community feel it would benefit the families of Frome to have a crossing on this section of a very busy road.”
The online petition has so far gathered 147 signatures. In support of the campaign, one local woman said, “My son needs to cross The Butts to get to school. I worry every day that the cars drive too fast along there. A crossing is definitely essential.”
On the Spotted about Frome Facebook page, one concerned resident said, “The Butts is a tragedy waiting to happen. Please sign (the petition).”
