FROME artist Violet Von Riot’s collage of Catherine Hill, that she started during lockdown, has been chosen to take part in the 118th annual Bath Society of Artists Open Exhibition.
Violet started the collage of the iconic hill in the centre of the town at the start of the pandemic in 2019 as she said she missed the hustle and bustle of the town during lockdown. It’s made using thousands of pieces of cut or torn up bits of old magazine.
This is her first attempt of creating a collage of a townscape, having previously focussed on pet portraits. Her work will now form part of the Bath Society of Art Exhibition that is taking place at Victoria Art Gallery in Bath until Saturday 24th June.
“During lockdown I suddenly found myself with extra time at home and I decide to create something different rather than completing a commission,” she explained. “I found that what I missed most was being out in the town, and in particular Catherine Hill, so I decided to recreate it after receiving nice photos of Frome by a local photographer called Tori that I could use as reference.
“I create my collage art using thousands of pieces of cut or torn up bits of old magazine, all locally donated and recycled, and Catherine Hill has a lot of Country Living magazine in its make up as it seems to match the colour pallet of our beautiful town!
“Having this piece selected has been such an enormous honour. I was able to attend the preview night and the diverse range of stunning work on display simply blew me away. I walked around the exhibition three times trying to take it all in.
“The exhibition is ongoing until the end of June, and visitors are able to vote for their favourite piece for the greatly sought after ‘People’s Choice Award’ it’s a great exhibition for all, with so many mediums available to both view and purchase.”
